Hi all, I have a bit of a problem with my avatar that no-one in world seems to be able to help me with.
I have been playing as a Tiny for the last week or so, and yesterday I tried to wear my human shape and skin for the first time since then. All of a sudden though, my skin is completely black from head to toe. Sometimes immediately after applying a skin my head has the correct texturing, but soon reverts to black.
I have tried a couple of the skins and shapes in my library, and it's always the same thing-pitch black. I have tried a texture rebake, tried editing my appearance, and also tried clearing my cache, nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

FYI, the textures in the appearance editor appear corrupted, those might very well be related.

Thanks :)

It might help to download a fresh copy of the SL viewer.

Even if I have the newest one? And then what, a full uninstall/reinstall?

Make sure you are not wearing anything you didn't know you were wearing. Take it off! Take it all off! It might just be SL acting the fool on weekends again. It's very common. You can always try The First Look Viewer.

I have made VERY sure, taken it all off (to the sounds of Hot Chocolate) but that didn't help. Strangely enough, I just tried putting on a newly created skin-and that one was textured. So it almost seems like the textures already in my inventory are foobar. No object textures seem to be affected though.

Here is a copy and paste from the Secondlife help pages.

If your avatar turns black
Try this:
==
On some systems, Second Life may encounter problems
if it's running on the secondary monitor.

In Windows XP/2000, monitor numbering is usually done in the
Control Panel > Display > Settings tab, like this:

Dual Monitor

If your avatar turns black
Try this:

1. Log out of Second Life.
2. Open Second Life on the primary monitor.
3. Go to Client menu > Character > Rebake Textures

This should "refresh" your avatar so you appear as expected again.
The Client menu can be accessed by pressing Ctrl-Alt-D (typo? i thought on windows it's Shft-Ctrl-Alt-D) , and it'll
appear next to the Help menu at the top of your screen.

Clear your cache. Then, put on the default skin in your inventory, and rebake.

You mentioned that textures in the appearance editor are corrupted. These textures come from files that come with the install and live on your computer in a folder called Character. If these files ard garbled, it could be helpful to replace them with a fresh copy by doing an un-install re-install.

I don't know for sure if corrupted files in the character folder would turn your skin black. But I'm guessing it must be frustrating for people to tell you to do things that you clearly stated in your post that you already tried.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I had actually tried each and every one of those (as well trying to log in on a different PC and with the first look viewer) and none of that helped. Today I finally combined all of the suggestions into one attempt and it worked. Created a new skin, shape, hair, eye,s clothes, the works and put it all on. Rebaked textures, cleared cache, shut down and restarted, and my stuff is all back in working order :)
My little orange kitty now has orange fur again, and he's very grateful for all the suggestions ;)
