Are we getting a new viewer tomorrow or aren't we?
Any friendly neighborhood Linden out there who'd care to clear this up? Last Friday, steve wrote that "The changes in First Look: Render Pipeline Improvements are scheduled to be released in the official version next week!". Since we are now in the week following the day of that post, I think just about everyone was expecting that that meant we'd be getting a nice new viewer tomorrow. I know I was.
However, today's post by Jeska says "there are no software updates, so no download will be required."
So, which is it? New viewer, or no new viewer? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Bueller's not here today, Mr. Few. He usually isn't in either, Mr. Few. *shrugs* Maybe they decided to hunt a few more bugs down before they release it as a main fewer? Or Jeska just assumed that everyone was already using the First Look viewer, so no download required?  _____________________

I have been wondering about this for the past week now myself. I entered 2 sessions in Help Request for assistance and I think I figured it out.

One post says theres going to be a new release and another says no release for the 2 hour downtime on wednesday [18:53] Gaybot Foxley: So that means tomorrow no update, but this week there will be an update sometime? The confusion I think is because the normal viewer is always released on Wednesdays with approximately 5 hours of down time. The normal viewer is always required to access Second Life. The First Look viewers are released on any day of the week and are optional upgrades. Tomorrow there will be no update and 2 hours of downtime between 7-9 AM SL time. On the Blog there are two Entries;
First one regarding the Weekly Wednesday Maintenance Shut down specificly said there would be NO Download or Patch associated with it. Second One Dated February 16th (Last Friday) Regarding the Viewer said it would be going Mainstream General Release "Some time next week" No specific date was mentioned. The First post i mentioned is subsequent to the Viewer post, so i think the Viewer will Not be made available on this Wednesday, It May be available on or before Friday, but i doubt it. My Guess is Next Wednesday (28th) Angel. |

well as one who has been submitting bug reports about the FirstLook, I frankly glad they didn't go full scale with it yet, it's majorly borked.
As for Dnate Mars' comment, I think they would be wise to provide a way for people to use their own client without forcing updates, seeing how the client is now open source. However I can see them wanting to make sure people who aren't interested in alternate clients upgrade to the latest client. I'm not exactly sure what would be the best way to handle both sides of that issue. _____________________

I was right about there not being a Download today, but they DID release another Update for the Viewer. They warn however of issues between the Viewer, and norton Antivirus, and reccomend removing your game Cache from scrutiny while they work on the problem. Since i dislike leaving any pert of my system Unprotected, I think i will skip this Update, as i occasionally have with others (The one true benefit of having them Optional). It's better to wait until they Fix this little conflict, any issues i may be having with the Current incarnation (And i don't really Know of any) are preferable to disabling my Virus protection.
