Since a couple of days ago hardware detection has taken upwards of 10 minutes to complete when opening SL. I have not changed any SL settings or computer configuration, it just takes forever now :|
EDIT: Not sure where to put this, so I think here will do, too.

Since Sunday, Yes, this seems to be a Part of the general Network troubles they described on the Blogs.

On the General tab of the Preferences there is a checkbox to uncheck to avoid doing the Auto-detect graphics hardware.
If you haven't changed your graphics hardware, you should be able to uncheck this box and avoid the delay without causing trouble.
Note I said should.

Box was already unchecked.
Is not login, it's the gray box that says "Detecting Hardware" before SL starts.

There shouldn't be a gray box that says "Detecting Hardware" when the auto-detect graphics hardware on next startup box is unchecked. I just started SL with the auto-detect on startup box unchecked. No "Detecting Hardware" box appeared. Then I checked the auto-detect on startup box and restarted SL. This time the words "Detecting Hardware" did appear. The " gray box that says "Detecting Hardware" before SL starts" is what the "auto-detect graphics hardware on next startup" is supposed to control the appearance of.

I agree Suezanne ... but .. I also agree with Snacks! I have 'disabled' check hardware but still get a box saying checking hardware .. albeit not the ten minutes that Snacks is reporting.

I have 'disabled' check hardware but still get a box saying checking hardware .. albeit not the ten minutes that Snacks is reporting. How long does that message stay displayed? With the autodetect turned on after having been turned off, the autodetect box appeared and took between 10 and 20 seconds - I just counted, so my result wasn't real accurate. I note that if I check the box while in the preferences from the login screen, and then quit without logging in, it won't save my choice. The "Loading Second Life" box is staying displayed nearly to the limits of my patience before advancing on to the login screen.

As I said earlier, the grey Detecting Hardware box displays for a long time before it opens the secondlife viewer.
"Auto Detect Graphics Hardware on Startup" is un-ticked.
Secondlife suddenly does not like a piece of my hardware, but I haven't changed my setup at all.

Do you have Windows autoupdate turned on?
If you do Client / Debug Settings, what value does it show for ProbeHardwareOnStartup?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling SL?
Are you using the standard viewer or the First Look viewer?
Is everything normal except for auto-detect?
You could try doing a system restore to a date before the problem occurred.
In Help About Second Life, what does it show for Graphics Card - does it detect your card properly?

I didn't switch anything last night, merely double checked in preferences before logging .. and auto-detect unticked and 'detecting hardware' displays for 10 - 20 secs Suezanne. This in normal viewer. Only loaded First Look last night and ran once ok with defaults.

Hardware detection issue is present in both first look and normal second life viewer. I reinstalled SL, but it still persisted.
It's certainly a strange problem... :|
