I have a freebie piece of jewlery that has a great texture. Is there any way to copy this texture so I can use it on other pieces?

Only if it's a full perm texture. Did the jewelry come with the texture separate? If so, check the permissions on the texture itself. To find out if you have that texture in inventory, the easiest thing to do is right click > edit > select texture > touch object where the texture is. Click more > texture tab > texture box. The texture menu will pop up. If the texture is in your inventory, it will show up with it highlighted in the leftmost part of the menu. If you don't have the texture in your inventory, you do not have permission to use it in other objects.
The next step is to contact the creator to see if they will allow you to use it (if its in your inventory) or buy it from them (if it's not) and, if true on either, go to town.

Just ask the creator for a copy of the texture, where you can find it on the web, or if you can buy it from them.

Edited to remove quote of instructions someone posted for stealing textures. I'm leaving the rest of the post intact hopefully to dissuade anyone else from posting similar instructions.
Textures are copyrighted material. Please respect the rights of the talented artist who put in his or her blood, sweat, & tears to create the thing. When you purchase an item in SL, you are not buying the item itself, just a limited use right to it. The limitations of your rights are spelled out by the permissions system. If an artist saw fit not to grant you full permissions, it's not for you to decide otherwise.
Now, is it easy to circumvent the permissions system, and steal any texture you want, any time you want it? Of course it is. That's no secret.
However, just because it's easy to steal doesn't mean it's right. It's pretty easy to walk into a grocery store, put a can of Spaghettios in your pocket, and walk out with it. You probably wouldn't do that though, because you know it's wrong. Taking textures without permission is the same thing. It's illegal and immoral.
If you want more permissive rights to an item, contact the creator. If he or she says no, live with it. It's just that simple.

Oops, you are right. I posted that thinking people would use it for legitimate reasons. I don't want to give anyone any ideas so I edited it.

Also, please don't equate "freebie" with "worthless." Often people put a lot of time and energy into making a gift for all residents and we should appreciate that. Often, too, the creator didn't intend the work to be free and was the victim of a permissions bug.

Robin, a little texture sleuthing and contacting the content creators can sometimes pan out in very positive ways. You won't know unless you give it a try. Chosen has often been the voice for many content creators in this forum on the subject of IP rights. I have often felt compelled to compose similar responses to bad suggestions, only to find that Chosen has already responded in a thorough, fair, and unconfrontational manner (as is the case here). Thanks for speaking up on my behalf on many occasions, Chosen. It's important to broadcast this knowledge so that everyone can gain a greater understanding of where the content in SL comes from, it's importance within SL, and how it is connected to everyone, especially the creative minds that made it real. Osprey also makes a valid point. It's certainly my hope that LL or someone will make it a lot easier in the future to track down the original creators of SL's lost and nameless IP that so often ends up in freebie items in the form of "No Name" or Linden "Newbie Template" as creator in the objects. Gaybot, thanks for understanding and editing your post

Assumptions

Please don't assume that because I'm a newbie that I'm dishonest. I don't understand how everything works here and I'm certainly not trying to steal anything.
I did indeed equate free with free and it did not occur to me that the person making the freebie might indeed want to protect their texture. And, it is protected, and therefore I would not take it even if I could. Integrity is the same in SL as RL.
So the next question is: Where would people suggest I look for jewelry textures?

From: Robin Ivory So the next question is: Where would people suggest I look for jewelry textures? If you own a digital camera or have a flatbed scanner, you may only need to look as far as your immediate surroundings. Certain flatbed scanners that do not have separate RGB passes (like most newer models) will do a nice job scanning very small items within a focal range of 1/2 to 1 inch. If that is not possible, there are tons of texture sites that can be googled for stuff like that. They usually contain copyright notices and terms of use notices. Just pay attention to what those say before using anything you might find. I recall several posts in the Design and Textures section that had links to texture sites. I can't say what their policies are for using the textures. You'll need to investigate that yourself.

Gaybot, thanks for understanding and editing your post Agreed, well said. I have some nice Gold Textures at my store, a Silver Set as well as some encrusted jewel sets coming soon. Generally you may find that most quality gem textures are pretty well guarded in SL.
