The "rez on demand" discussion just caused Lindal to have a brainstorm.
Let's say you own several small. widely separated 512 m2 plots, but you want a big house. Now, consider the phenomenon of teleportation.
I see you're way ahead of me already. You could have rooms in your house scattered all over the grid. Go out your front door and you're on an island. Out the back and you're in snow country. Out the side and into an alley in Midnight City. The bedroom balcony opens onto a scene in Luskwood. Simply put teleporters between your rooms, and you have a Distributed House!
Surely I'm not the first person to think of this??? (Now that I *have* thought of it, I wish I'd thought of it sooner!)

Many years ago I read a Sci-fi short story called something like 'The Six Dimensional House' where you could go through the door to the toilet & find yourself in the Sahara Desert or on Mars or falling from a door opening onto a thousand feet of thin air. I've also speculated whether a TP script could be added to doorways to create something similar.
Sadly I think I'll be measured up for my coffin before I have the skills needed to realise it.

That would be "And He Built A Crooked House", by the late great Robert A. Heinlein. Larry Niven also touched on some of the possibilities in his classic essay, "The Theory and Practice of Teleportation", reprinted in the collection "All The Myriad Ways" and other places.
Like the SL house based on M.C. Escher's "Relativity", this concept just begs to be implemented in SL!

I've heard people talk about this but it has never appealed to me personally. It would be fun, no doubt.

You are either incredibly quick around Google or have a much, much better memory that me. Thinking about it the basic idea is already at work in SL through the Stargate network.

/me giggles.
I *do* google a lot of stuff, but that one came out of long term storage. I have a lot of SF trivia stuck back in there.

I think the reason why this hasn't happened on SL is that you can already teleport from your living room to anywhere you want, anyway. Although you can set up a teleporter in your back door that takes you to a different area, the experience is no less disjointed than it is for teleporting by other means (the only way an in-world object can teleport you to another sim is to use MapDestination routing which means the map has to pop up) If you could have portal gates in SL, as in, um, "Portal" (or "Narbacular Drop" then this would be wonderful, but SL at the moment kinda makes it less attractive than it sounds.

The "Firefly" spaceship hovering over Rua uses a related concept for the crew quarters, in this case giving a Tardis-like illusion of the inside being much larger than the outside. Clicking the door to enter the room teleports you to a separate skybox elsewhere in the same sim, and clicking the ladder in the room, takes you back to the ship. Because it's in the same sim, the teleport is the quiet kind (no whoooosh), so that helps with the illusion that the quarters are actually part of the ship. Hmmmm... you just made me remember the hypercube house, which simulates being inside a tesseract. I think I definitely need to visit that!

The crooked house lives in SL and is fun!! I wish I could remember offhand where it was, to tell you where it is.

Seifert Surface built the Crooked House. There's an article about it here, including a SLURL http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2006/06/_and_he_rezzed_.html

It would seem a collision based teleporter could give the impression of "walking through the door" and into another location...perhaps an invisible teleport prim just on the other side of the door...which would automatically pop the AV to that other locale...
Does anyone know if a collision based teleporter is possible? (needless to say, scripting isn't my forte)
...and then think of all the possiblities of those 16m plots being used as doorways...

The crooked house is in "The Future". Haha. That sounds so cryptic....
I have thought of a distributed house and I have seen some before... not one that spans several sims though. They are set up with teleports that send you to different living areas. You can make a door that will teleport you when clicked on, which is what most people do to open doors anyways. I don't think you can walk into something and get tp'd though. I think that could be horribly abused.

Sadly no. "Sit teleportation" can only happen in the same sim. Teleporting between sims requires going through the teleport process with the blackout and the progress bar (because you actually have to disconnect from one server and connect to another)

Notes to self; 1) Come up with brilliant. original build idea. 2) DO NOT discuss with anyone else. Ever! 3) Spend months on build. 4) Ban everyone from land in order not to discover that it's been done bigger & better several times over at least 3 years before you were born.

There was some mention of an idea just like this at some virtual architecty type group chat that I remember.
One of the few uses for home teleporters I would endorse.
