I want to download textures from the site but I`m not exactly sure where I`m supposed to save them for SL use.

Textures you can use inside SL will end up in your inventory when you upload them from your computer into SL. They go in the Textures folder. That is the default location, but any place in your inventory will do.

You can't save them on your local hard drive and use them directly from there, if that is what you meant. While you can download full-perms textures from SL to your system to modify, they must be uploaded back into SL, and into your inventory, for you or anyone else to be able to use them.

Just to be sure I understand this correctly...

I would download the file form the site to my harddrive, unzip it someplace. Then go into SL, and use the upload file in the top bar to get it loaded into the game. Am I correct?

Well, it depends on what you are trying to do, and where the textures are to begin with.

There are tons of textures already available to use in-world. A bunch of them are provided to all users in the "Library" section of your inventory. You can use those as-is, without doing anything else. A lot of other textures are available as freebies, or you can buy them from stores like Textures-R-Us, where I sell custom building textures.

So to make a chair or a house or something else in world, and to texture the surfaces of the prims as something other than raw plywood, the in-world resources cover most of what you would need, and nothing needs to be on your local hard drive.

If you're making clothes for use in SL, or if you need to modify an existing texture in SL to do something like add a window to a wall texture that has no window, or if you want to create a new texture or import one from some other source, then your local hard drive gets into the act.

There are template files on this website for making clothes. They show you where on a square texture to paint things so they end up in the right place on the shirt, skirt, or body. The Texture Tips forum has a wealth of information and better downloadable templates from Chip Midnight and Robin Sojurner, that can help you understand how to make textures, and how to use them for clothes or skins.

If you found some texture somewhere on the Internet, or downloaded it from a website, be aware that it probably is copyrighted, and it's not legal for you to use that for SL, unless the source clearly says it is copyright-free and allowed for use in derivitive works.

If you drew something yourself or took a picture yourself and want to use that in-world, then format it appropriately and upload it as a texture to your inventory to use it in SL.

Go to the Testure Tips forum in this website, and read the threads that are pinned to the top of the forum. That will answer most of your questions.

You just pushed my confusion even further.

I don`t know why you are talking about these other options when I already stated that I want to download them from the SL site and made no statement about making my own.

All I was wanting to know was where to put them and how I get SL to recognize the textures that I downloaded.

Ceera explained to you that the textures on your hard drive will not be seen by SL in any way shape or form *until* you upload them to the game. The game has everything done server side, not client side, meaning everything it uses is on LL's computers, not yours.

If you want the texture to use in game (regardless of where you got the texture) you will need to upload it using File > Upload.

Edited to add: Ceera is a huge help in texturing. She knows her stuff.
