Does anyone have any tips for becoming an In-World Liaison? What skills should you acquire? What is it helpful to know?

I believe there is an application link somewhere on the site.

I know that already, but what kinds of skills are they looking for? I already have people skills and I'm learning how to script. I know my way around SL very well and have even helped some people out. What else should I know?

From what I understand, they generally prefer that you've been in-world at least 6 months.

Play SL for a long while and get used to how it works.

Help new users (especially) and try to manage and organise things in the world.

For goodness' sake don't think of doing it just to get access to God tools. From what I've heard, every time a Linden uses one of those, they have to tell their boss exactly why, with evidence. (That's why they always want you to file Abuse Reports against griefers - they're stored in a database that Lindens can use in justifying actions.)

There is a bit of general confusion about whether volunteering is a good idea. Joining Live Help gives you almost the exact experience of being a Linden Liaison, and might well make a good qualification - on the other hand there is the risk that it would count against you, because if you're already doing the work for free, why pay you? I don't know which way it goes, since LL don't give out the information..

Be fluent, or at least versed, in a non-English language.

Another potential bit of confusion is if having a business or similar in SL hurts you or helps you. There used to be a rule that Lindens had to be impartial, meaning they couldn't run businesses in SL at the same time as being a Linden (not even with alts), but I think that rule has gone now because it excluded an awful lot of good people - although I'm not 100% sure.

Then finally you apply, which I think for Liaison is done by sending your CV on a notecard to Cory Linden, but there are more details about how to do it on the website.

I think having a good reputation as a patient helpful person would help; it requires great people skills.

Go to your Account page on the SL web site, click "volunteering", and then for Live Help, click "apply".

Note that you need to have been in-world for at least a few months first. You need good people skills but you also need to know a lot of the internals of SL. Can you answer "I sold some land from my group then bought some new land, now I am being charged double the tier, why?" You might need to :)

If you haven't been in world long enough to sign up as a Linden volunteer there is nothing to stop you simply hanging around at Welcome Areas and in newbie spots and just plain helping people as best you can. If you do well, you will be noticed, trust me - maybe not by the Lindens, but by the management of these places.
