Anyone know what size (pixel ratio) these snapshots are supposed to be? Not interested in repeating the "five upload attempts and my pic is still squished" experience I had with my profile pic. :-)

According to http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Limits, it's 178x117 pixels.

As just said, it is reported as (178x117 pixels) in the wiki.

That's a 3 to 2 ratio.

If I understand the process correctly, this means your best approach would be to make a picture with a 3 to 2 ratio, but bigger than 178 by 117, say, 356 x 234.

Then resize to powers of two, say 512 x 512.

When you upload the image it will get converted to a power of 2 by power of 2 jpeg 2000 image anyway. By converting it to powers of 2 dimensions yourself, you get to determine which power of two the end result will be.

When it's displayed in the About Land tab, it will be stretched into the 3 by 2 ration and appear correctly proportioned.

Chose Few will probably have posted a better answer by the time I click submit.

Those exact pixel counts need some kind of qualification in the wiki, because they shrink and grow with UI size in the SL preferences. They also vary a tiny bit over time (some of today's quick checks are a pixel or two off from Torley's in a few places), and those textures are used in multiple panels (land settings, places search, web-based search, more :p).

This is insane. If they can make trees and clouds disappear at will and tell us in numbers how annoying our avatars are to render, then they should flippin' well be able to put a little button on the About Land box (and the Profile box) that we can click to get a picture correctly sized immediately added to the box. It's not like they don't know we're going to want pics that size in that place. That we should have to download a pic, torture it in some external program until it intentionally looks wrong, upload it, then apply it knowing SL is going to torture it more, all for a pic that SL itself is asking us for, is just ... insane. There's no other word for it.

Thanks for the information, guys.
