SL in a Game Lobby System

Hi Folks,

This is just a curious question, but would like your comments on this.

I guess some of you have used or know about Game Lobby systems like MSN Zone, GameSpy Arcade, WGC Center, etc. Althought SL is not a game, what would your opinion be if one of the system supported the launching of SL from it.

The other thing that these lobby systems do is to allow people to chat online outside the game, via the general lobby chat or the hosted room.

Would this be benefical to people who use SL? One scenario this could be useful is when SL is being updated, as there is no where else people can chat online whilst the system is offline (beta grid is the alternative). Another scenario is that people could immediately ask questions, or just generally chat.

Your opinions? Thanks.

Out of those listed I'm only familiar with Gamespy, but isn't the main point of those types of services to facilitate finding servers and arranging matches in the type of game for which there may be hundreds of different servers all over the world? It seems kind of silly to tie SL to something like that, since there's only one SL grid and all your friends are in it.

Chatting when the grid is down could be useful. Not for me personally (I'm picturing something that looks like Group IMs but involving 30,000 people at a time, and cringing at the thought ;) ) but sure, a real time off-world watering hole might be nice.

ummmm, why not simply use irc that already has SL members?

The problem that I see with this is that it will reaffirm the misconception that Second Life is a game. If Second Life becomes launchable from one of these game lobbies, then we should expect to see a bunch of new users treating the grid like it's a first-person shooter. FPS games are fun, I know, I've played them before, but that's not what SL is.

But FPS is a part of SL too, just in certain areas.

That's true. I just don't have high confidence that the average user coming from a game lobby will understand that FPSing is "just in certain areas."
