It's a good step they're taking by engaging people in surveys. Whether they actually have the people capable of reading trends on a customer satisfaction basis is another issue.

I've worked in customer service for most of my working life and often find it odd when people try to measure "satisfaction" because many people are never satisfied. That's why they keep buying products and subscribing to different services in the first place!
If there was some sort of follow-through on the part of the "project open letter" people after a certain amount of time then it wouldn't have been a failure. I think LL knew most of the residents that spend all their time complaining have short attention spans (just look at how often the popular subjects change on the forums) and will still log in anyway.
And LL doesn't measure by who has premium accounts. They measure by who logs in. If the open letter people were to have said "...or we will stop logging in for a period of one month" and actually followed through with it then I think LL would have changed their tune.
However, they knew you couldn't stop even if you wanted to...and you didn't!
