Alas, there is no clothes layer for the head, so the only way to add a tattoo would be to paint it onto the skin texture. You could also use a prim attachment, but it might look odd from some angles.

I wanted a similiar thing, although not facial. i wanted a barcode for the back of the head (Agent 47 costume).
Sopke to some people and got the response posted above. Need to mod a skin.
I've done the barcode by texturing a prim, and positioning it. Works ok really :)

I'm fairly new to this so apologies if I'm confusing the issue.

On the Appearance Menu -> Skin Tab there's are boxes to add tattoo textures, including a head tattoo. So if you make a tattoo on a transparent background you can then apply it over a modifiable skin. In fact it seems to me that it's the reverse of what's been said in that you can only apply a different skin texture as a tattoo, not the other way round. This would only be a problem if you're wearing a no mod skin in the first place?

Those tattoo boxes ARE the skin.. Yer right, you would end up replacing part of the skin... dont ;) And yes, you only see those boxes on modifiable skins.

Arua, there are places that sell modable skins, but you gotta really search (Cryolab and Nomine spring to mind). However ALL skins are such that you cant simply add a texture to them... its just how LL set it up. I have seen things like scars, stitches, scratches, even tribal tattoos made out of prim attachments for the face/head. Some are very nice but very hard to find. Yes I totally agree... no transfer on skins pisses me off.

You might want to IM the skin maker and see if they are open to making a custom face skin for you. Maybe it'll cost extra... maybe they won't do it... but you might want to try.

A single scar can be done with a prim attachment. Create a red streak in Photoshop, on a new layer. Save the transparency of that layer as an alpha channel. Color the background layer red too (to avoid white seams around the scar). Flatten the image to the background layer and save it as TGA file, 32 bit.
Upload the texture, apply it to a flat box, or better a flattened cylinder, pick the prim up, attach it to your head and pull it into position.

You can only apply transparent textures to a default linden skin.

If youre wearing a skin made by a designer the 'tattoo' texture boxes are taken with their custom skin textures (Which cover the default linden skin). If you go into appearance mode and put a transparent texture where the head layer is... their texture for that nice $1KL+ skin you bought is going to be gone, leaving your head noob looking with your neck down nicely "skinned."

The only decent way to make head tattoos at this point is with prims, and that can be a bit of a [huge] problem.

LL really needs to add a new layer so we can apply tattoos to an avatar head over a custom skin.

I'd been wondering about this for a while. I just found the suggestion in JIRA. Here's the link!

Vote! :)

If the skin is mod/copy, as some are, you can change a COPY of the skin, and leave the original intact.

However, you will basically have a Linden head with your tattoo added, so you will lose the makeup, eyelashes, etc. from your bought skin. You can use the sliders to give yourself makeup, but it's not the same. Also, the skin tone of the head will be determined by the sliders; getting it to match the rest of your skin might be difficult or impossible.

Why would anyone do that though, that`s just disastrous. Linden default skins are horrible compared to (most) custom skins. So, this really isnt an option... as you stated... It will be impossible to match the default with the custom.

This is why i get bothered when tattoo shops sell "head tattoos" as skins and fail to put up signs saying "Warning!! The use of this will remove your custom skin!! and look like complete crap"..

..Why take someones money and leave them unsatisfied with the product...I say, make sure your customers know how completely insane the idea of putting the tattoo "skin" head texture with their custom skin really is.

I have successfully used Studio Lis makeup (transparent head with makeup and eyelashes) with some custom skins. So yes, it can be done, but you'll spend quite a bit of time with the skin sliders to get the color match as close as possible. You do lose the face detailing that came with the skin, but the makeup is very nice.

And if it doesn't work out, and you're working with a mod/copy skin, at least you're only out the cost of the head tattoo; the original copy of your expensive skin is intact. I would never recommend trying it on a no-copy skin unless you can't stand the makeup that came with it and would never wear the unmodified skin.

All in all, it's probably better to look for prim tattoos for the head, even though they can be tricky to fit.

People rarely ever sell tattoos/makeup baked with a partial skin on the face any more. There are security permissions loopholes with selling raw textures. It also looks like crap because a perfect color match is impossible with any type of realistic texture overlay on top of the default LL skin.

If you want to put tattoos on the avatar face (or elsewhere) overlaying a resident created skin, make sure you buy a skin from a resident that offers that service. That way you get proper layering (including all the sub-layering effects in Photoshop).

To the best of my knowledge, there are plenty of skin designers offering custom overlays if the customer has the full permissions tattoo texture, or has worked out a deal with the tattoo artist. Therein lies the true problem. People aren't willing to just hand over thier IP with full permissions to anybody. Skin designers are the least likely to do this because they have the most to lose. It may take 10 minutes to whip up a little heart tattoo for someones avatar fanny, but a full body skin takes a little more effort than 10 minutes in Photoshop. Some tattoos are almost as complex to create as skins. This doesn't mean the IP rights of the heart tattoo artist are any less important. What we really need is a system built into SL that will allow residents to collaborate on this type of texture work without putting thier IP in jeapordy. The proposal is nearly as old as SL (generalized texture layers). When it will be addressed is entirely another story.

The only other realistic option for residents is to become a skin designer and do all thier own work in Photoshop. That's what I did.

If you have the full permissions scar texture mapped to the UVW, I can have someone do the texture baking work for L$300. Of course you need to own one of my skins (Second Skin Labs).

Im falling asleep so maybe Im misunderstanding... You first said it was impossible now youre saying youve matched up the colors before? *Confused*

Not being rude by the way, I really dont get it. lol

Have you tried IMing the creator to suggest a scar?

I can not speak for anyone else but if someone messages me and says "Hey I think it would be cool if you made a ____________" and i can picture it in my mind- I`ll make it. Chances are if they want it someone else will too.

Worth a shot. Also adding a scar really isnt alot of work, its not like they have to recreate a skin for you.
