vista+ati catalyst 7.1 for vista

well i recently installed microsoft's new OS, vista..

ati released their final drivers for vista, and i installed them, installation went ok. (no error's)

afther the restart, instead of errors telling me no openGL device was detected, i was able to se a glimp of the login screen, then the program/game crashes, anyone else having this?

i'm using the following system, if anyone else has the same problem i know i can make a support ticket at ati, and get it sended tot he ati driver crew, so they too can test it and check if it works 100%, if it does, then its probalby my system configuration, (game runs good in XP... (same settings), so its 99% chance its NOT my fault..

just wanna get rid of the 1% extra...

I get just the same error. I've tried running SL in compatibility mode / running as admin etc. with no result.

fwiw I had the ATI beta drivers and then installed (not upgraded) to 7.1

Had vista for a while never got SL working (second test machine)

ATI x850 Dual 2.8g Xeon 4g Ram
Clean install + all updates
Installed drivers 7.1
Installed SL

Starts almost login screen then shuts down with standard SL has found an error send report

video - Ati Radeon 9250 -256mb
OS- Windows Vista RTM (Vista Ultimate)
DirectX 9c

ATI claims that only 9500 series and newer will work and that my card is unsupported

Here is a tip - catalyst doesn't work.
Look for the Omega Radeon Drivers. I have been running SL for about 2 weeks now without too many issues.

Driver version 6.14.10.0313 seem to be the ones to do the trick.

how to install the omega drivers that are for XP? or did omega release drivers for vista? because i'm running vista, if i'm NOT installing the vista drivers, i cant shutdown my pc normally, it'll just crash, and i need to hold the power switch for 5 seconds to get it shutdown....

as far as the beta drivers: the pre-final (those which are posted yesterday) did NOT include OpenGL drivers, and the older catalyst drivers, released by them in december 2006 would not work, those released yesterday are final, aka no longer beta, so ati gives support on those.. reading the reply's i read that ati FUBAR-ed stuff here, because it wont work.. going to try drivercleaner pro in just a sec hope it will fix this issue (it'll delete all ati drivers found in/on the system...)


going to make extra support ticket adressing the issue at the ati catalyst driver crew, its good to see im NOT the only one..


also, DO make a ticket at the secondlife support side, best to battle this from 2 sides, the faster it'll be fixed....

I made my post this morning before heading out the door for work. I will look for the installer this evening and see if i can get you more information. I think it was bundled in catalyst 4.7 although i'm not sure.

AS a side note. When running sl on a vista system, i haven't noticed any performance gains or losses.

Being in the tech sector for nearly 10 years, i think everyone should wait until the first vista milestone has been crossed (AKA Service Pack 1). I know all the cool kids are doing it and we all wanna be cool. The only reason i have Vista installed and running SL is because someone told me it couldnt be done with my hardware setup and i really dont like being told what i can or can not do

I failed to address this, but when i do a simple reboot on my system at what seems to be the final stages before the system restarts i get the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) but the system recovers just nicely.

So yea- its possible that i'm running the non vista drivers, but only as necessity
