Land Purchasing troubles.

I've tried land auction, but it cost a lot of money. I have tried used land but it still cost money. I've gone to the Land Store, but it doesn't tell you the size of the land. So I ask, how do you get your 512 sq/m of free land?

I have Premium.

This is a common misconception...... there isnt any "free land", only land free from a monthly tier fee.

All land costs money to purchase from other players etc.

On my account info, it says eligible to 512 sq/m of land, monthly tier $0.00

Like Marty already mentioned: ain't no such thing as free land. You will have to buy your 512 parcel. But you don't have to pay tier for it.

It says I'm eligible to 512sq/m of FREE land before having to pay a monthly tier. FREE!

There's 2 expenses related to land.

1) The "tier" cost. This is a monthly fee that is charged for all land that is owned by an account. Linden labs waives the tier fee for all premium account holders for a standard 512sqm of land. If, for example, you were to purchase 1024sqm of land, you would be charged an additional X$ on top of your normal premium account fees to hold that land.

2) The purchase cost of the land. All land has a cost. it seems to be averaging around 10L/sqm, although you can probably find a deal for cheaper if you look hard enough. There is *no* free land in Second Life. You must purchase any land you hold.

You are getting the two mixed up. There is no monthly charge to own 512sqm- there is a charge, however, to buy it.

allthough in theory .... when you originally became a premium member you would get L$1000 and could buy first land for L$512, but as the first land program no longer exists .... ]

Its now a case of you can buy 512 for about 5k and not have any additional costs

OK, this isn't quite accurate, but it may help to think of it this way:

When you finance a car, you're expected to put some amount of money down, then make monthly payments for a set period of time. In SL, you have to put money down on (aka 'purchase') the land, then make maintenance payments ('tier') for as long as you own it. If you are a Premium member and you own mainland, Linden Labs waives the maintenance fees for up to 512m of land. If you purchase island/estate land instead, you probably WILL have to pay tier, as islands are privately owned and the owners make the rules. You can filter for mainland via the drop down menu on Search>Land.
