I did a Knowledge base search for "Lag" and it said "no results found" how can that be? With all the lag problems, how can there be NO entries for Lag?
So anyway, what can I do on my side to improve lag?

Do not go to areas with too many people or prims. Make sure you have enough RAM. (They say 1 Gig is ok but 2 Gigs is ideal) Update your graphics card and/or its driver. Play around with the preferences. There are sliders for avatar, prim, tree, object meshes that can make things render faster depending on what your graphics card can handle. Also in preferences there is a draw distance. I think the lower that number the closer you must be to something to make it appear, but things will appear faster. Avoid bling & blingtards. Avoid wearing too many physical or flexiprims. Make sure in preferences, network, that your bandwidth slider is set to 2/3 of what your connection supplies you with overall. Reducing particle count in preferences may help. I heard if you type Ctrl + Alt + Shift + 4 it will make all avatars invisible. I've used it as a last resort in events when I'm lagged to death. Under the client tab at the top (summoned with Ctrl + Alt + D) you turn off the sky, clouds, the grass, trees, etc. Hmmm..what else..

Faybot you covered it very well. I have to second the 2 Gig RAM thing. I just got a new laptop, excellent video card and specs, but with 1 Gig SL was still very disapointing. We added another gig and it has made all the difference in the world!!!
(Oh and doesn't wearing HUD's and AO's increase lag too?) |

I have 2 Gig RAM, I have a top of the line gaming lap top but tonight I can't seem to walk further than a step without grinding to a halt for a minute or more. I was in a sim that had about 15 people in it, lots of prims and scripts as it was a magic based sim and apparently based on where people were when I came out of my time dilated reality I was the only one experiencing it.
What good are all the flexi prims, 3d textures, cool skins, nifty magic wands, if you can't use them? What good is SL if you can't look at people, sky, grass, etc. in order to move? |

Maybe it an issue with your provider? I mean there can be many reasons for lag. And to be honest, I am at moment close to lag free... even in the more busy area's. Morwen. |

Reduce your draw distance to between 50 and 64 when you aren't flying about.

Maybe you could post what it says in Help->About Second Life. I looked up "top of the line gaming lap top" but didn't really find anything..

I have found that being alone and not interacting with other people helps my lag immensely. Pretend this is a single-player game!

here's one of the KB lag articles: http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=273
Here's the Google search of seconlife.com/knowledgebase for "lag" I believe the KB search is not letting you search for three letter terms. It should! You can search the KB better, or at least differently, from Google. Just put your term, followed by "site:http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase" in the google search field, like this: lag site:http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase This will let you search for some three letter words, like lag. _____________________
