Download whilst on SL increasing hugely - help please?

I am fairly new to SL. I started small just browsing around, meeting people. I spent about 3-4 hours a day on SL and during that time my data upload and download remained quite small at about 150-200MB.

Now I have a full inventory, land, a house with furniture, etc and the same time spent on SL is producing downloads of around 700MB -1GB.

My question is: Does the data download increase on SL the more you hold in your inventory and in your "profile", i.e is the large amount of stuff I have causing the extra data and what can I do to lower it?

Many thanks in advance for your help (Reason for my question is that I have a data limit on my ISP)

there is little you can do to reduce this, its mostly based on what you do and where you go

Inventory is only downloaded once (on the next log-on after clearing cache and after you try to search for something by typing in a letter) so that's really not much of a factor :).

If you're listening to a music stream on SL that's likely to eat up about 200Mb of download in 3-4 hours though, video even more than that. I stopped listening to streams in-world because my ISP has a monthly download limit as well and it nearly halved the amount for me, although it's obviously a pain if you go to a club with live music :(.

Check your draw distance as well, the higher it is the more you can see but also the more gets downloaded.

Tp'ing from place to place always adds quite a bit. If you used to just stay in the same place for 3 hours, chatting, then you'd use up far less than if you hop around and visit 10 different places now.

Thanks Kitty - what you say makes sense and at first I sat chatting a lot and now I'm TP'ing all over the place - so I expect that is it.

I'm glad I haven't got to hold a yard sale then to get rid of my inventory.

Thanks guys for your help!

Felicity - another suggestion in addition to those above: Under Preferences // Network, increase the size of your Cache to its maximum setting. That should conserve some additional bandwidth.

Thanks, Travis - I will try that because following Kitty's advice I sat quietly in one location doing nothing and my download meter was still going crazy - it is getting so I can now only go on for a really short time otherwise I will reach my limit for the month.

I don't want to have to leave SL - but at this rate I might have to give it up :(

OMG! :o I didn't mean that you shouldn't tp around :(.

I just pointed out that if you're going to tp around a ton then you'll have more download so that's something to keep in mind :). Don't just stay in the same spot, that's not much of an SL experience.

What is your draw distance set to? It's under the Edit menu, then Preferences, then under Graphics.

And what is your download limit with your ISP?
