I know I started a thread for "Suggested Topics for Talking Ethics events" already but I wasn't able to add a poll to it, so here's the poll! Unfortunately, I don't think the poll feature will let you choose more than one answer, so if you have a few favourite topics, feel free to post them in the thread.

Oh wow! There's no way I can pick just one. I'm not even sure I can rank them in any sort of order. Thx for getting this up & running Seleras

Yeah, I think most of these would be great topics and would be hard pressed to pick a favorite.

I like the idea of business and intellectual property.
For example p2p teleport and the whole GOM situation last year was great.

Since posting this thread, we've had discussions on Creator Rights/IP, Business and Marketing ethics, Conflicts in ethical systems, Error and Responsibility, Reciprocity and Relationships, Alt Identity and Privacy, Limits of Roleplay, and Consideration and Capitalism.

If you had any favourite topics out of the bunch, would like more discussions on those themes, or have ideas for new topics, please post here and answer the poll above!

Thanks everyone!

I'd also like to add, feel free to send me a notecard or IM in-world if you have an idea for discussion that you'd rather communicate about it privately first.

More discussions, more hosts?
11-14-2006 22:11
I am looking for people who might be interested in hosting more ethics-related discussions. These could focus either on areas of ethics that you prefer or that we choose together. The discussions could take any format, and not necessarily in the format I have done the Talking Ethics events.

If you are interested and available to help host some ethics-related discussion events, please send me a notecard or post here, just let me know! (IMs are okay, but they often get capped if I'm offline.)

Thanks!

supplemental hosting

i would be able to host an ethics group discussion sometimes. you have done an amazing job so far. i have valued our group discussions and feel they are an important forum that is making sl a better place as well as spilling over into the way people consider issues in rl. perhaps there are a few more who would be willing to share hosting duties so it wouldn't become too much to do for any of us.

I might be interested... it'll depend on some specifics, but one of the things I love best about SL is the discussion possibilities.

Poll Results!
01-19-2007 20:39
I'm still looking for more people to host ethics discussions at Villa Bilbao for all who are interested!

I wanted to make note of the poll on preferred topics for discussion, since the responses have grown to show a clear preference:

"Relationships, Obligations and Loyalty" is leading the pack as the favoured topic, almost double the votes (11) that the runner-up topic of "Philosophy of Ethics" has received (6). This week's dilemma topic involves relationships and obligations, and we'll see what we can do about Philosophy of Ethics topics for future discussions.

Third place is currently tied between "Creator Rights and Intellectual Property" and "Truth and Honesty in RL and SL" at 4 votes each.

As always, if you have any specific dilemmas or topics to suggest that aren't in here, just let me know!

Please feel free to keep posting ideas and preferences for ethics topics!

If you like more than one choice in the poll, just post your top two or few in the thread. I do pay attention to the feedback when planning events, even if it's not immediately apparent!

This week, we are doing some Philosophy of Ethics with the meta-ethical question of what ethics is... and we shall continue with more!

I like the more abstract questions rather than personal in that I think personal is subjective..sort of "how should one be" questions don't interest me much. But how society should be does. Or what motivates individuals.

Here are my 3 favorite questions I use to sort people out for myself:

Ring toss game: The objective is the get the rings onto the pole in the ground. You can stand anywhere you want to do this. Where do you stand?

Cook and diner: You have worked hard cooking a great meal. You have to assume that you are a meat eater for this but if you are not just put veggie lasagna in its place. You are dividing up the meal for the plates to be served. One portion is bigger/tastier/better in some way than the other. Do you keep the better one for yourself because you did all the work and deserve it or do you give it to your guest?

Dividing line: Your child is in a store and needs to call you (her parent) to pick her up for a ride home as arranged. She is short a nickel for the call and approaches the store owner for the nickel telling him that you will repay it when you come to pick her up. You get the call, drive to the store (you are in a hurry like most parents these days) and honk at her to let her know you are there. When she gets to the car she tells you what she told the shop keeper about the nickel. You tell her to get in because the shop keeper doesn't expect to get a nickel back..it is too small an amount to worry about and he would have just given it to the child anyway. You drive away. Was this the right or wrong thing to do? And why?
