Regarding the post made by Robin Linden about the main SL forums closing.
Looks like the final phase out of the dedicated groups will happen in about three months. I think this is a good time to start talking about a few things:
1) Again I ask... How much is this forum used and looked at and by who?
2) Is the above use enough to warrant creating a new forum on a private site?
3) If it is a needed and wanted thing, what program/host should we use?
4) Who and how will the forums be run, maintained and moderated?
At the last ladies tea we talked about and implemented a contest to create an inworld "Caledon Community Communications" board. That will both hand out events lists, store and landmark directories, various group advertisements, Caledon TOS, and general announcements. You can get contest info at any of the Caledon hubs.
Chance Takashi is writing the script and I have the understanding that when someone touches the board a pop up menu comes up and gives person the option to pick what information they would like to get. Not to be limited to the normal note card giver script that we all know that will give ALL the note cards in the board.
Perhaps that can take the place of most the information here in the forums?
I want to make it clear that I am not interested in killing off the communication within this group, but I do wish to find a way to keep it manageable, accessible, and easy to use for everyone from the officers of the ladies society to the members of the society and perhaps even to become a valued tool for all of Caledon.
I welcome and encourage responses to this post, good or bad… I have no idea who reads this forum or what your needs are. So tell me!
Serra

Serra,
I suspect that the new group tools forthcoming in 1.12 will be enough to cover the communications currently in evidence here in the forums. It includes the ability to 'attach' notecards or other items to hand out to everyone in the group in case a 'notice' doesn't provide enough text space.
I really haven't seen evidence of enough use here to justify someone setting up a separate site for us. If needs changed later, we could always resurrect the concept.

Well, it looks like there is a Caledon forum at http://caledonians.org/ - I have no idea how (in-)official this is, it would be a possible place to establish a subforum for the Ladies' society.

I try to check in here fairly often - I like boards simply because they store history, and allow threaded conversation.
If we can't find another place to move to, I can set up a phpbb or somesuch for us on a box from here - its the sort of thing I spend my day doing anyhow - may as well be for some thing fun

I like forums, as I can check into what is happening whilst I'm at work as I can't get into SL.

I like having an out-of-world source of information. Since I do not have a home in Caledon, I get a great deal of my information from this forum. I can, of course, make adjustments to my lifestyle (like checking the events postings more often) should this forum drift into obscurity. But I like having it.

If the Ladies' Society would prefer a website, Theodore has offered to host it (I didn't even have to ask, awwww). Domain registration with GoDaddy is quite affordable, and I would be delighted to contribute the fees to the group. We seem to have a wealth of options and ideas, and I am sure that many in-world solutions will emerge as well!
PS With a domain, members of the Society could have aliases. This might be useful for folks without gmail accounts.

so it sounds like a few of us would like to keep the forums somewhere - and we have a number of options for doing so

Gmail accounts are available

I have about 85 GMail account invitations left. If you would like one, please drop me a note (lynnewu.secondlife@gmail.com) with a current email address and I'll forward an invitation to you.
They're very useful because you can access them via web/POP and have about 2.7GB (yes, gigabytes) of storage associated with them and they're completely free, less the fairly unobtrusive advertising.

A Society website would be invaluable, and would allow a level of civility to be maintained that is difficult on a general forum. Perhaps we can discuss our options further at the next Tea or some other meeting? If we decide to go with our own domain, I would suggest a .org. There are still many naming options available (in fact, nearly every name I tried is available) and it lends a certain dignity to the organization.

I believe it would fit the society the best.

I agree we need something. I worry about using one of the existing "forums" out there for our uses. I feel there is too much potential drama in picking one. I am very interested in our own web space, or running our own forums. I will be back in town on Monday night.
We can all talk about this on the coming tea on Saturday; I believe it is at 4pm SL time. I will post an official time and place Monday night when I get home from vacation.
This next meeting might be crammed with business talk. We have to talk about the communication board and now this forums stuff.
There might be a small chance we will have to put off the talk of the forums to a separate meeting, depends on how focused we can be.
Talk to you all soon, Miss Serra

I may be pretty much universally unable to attend any Ladies' Society events, but I can certainly provide forums or space with a moment's notice, as I have simply Gigabytes to spare and a kind host who will install such things with a mere click.

Another thought on the forums:
08-30-2006 13:16
How do you all think a blog would work for a means of communication?
I have a few LJ accounts and I like the way they work, we can set one up as a group account so any member can post at anytime. They have archiving rules so there can be a fairly fast way to find related threads if we all use the key words.
Just another idea... Miss Serra.

Feature Suggestions
08-31-2006 05:49
A blog is an excellent idea! There are also free forum tools that would be adequate if this format is preferred. The one feature that I personally hope to see added to the website (or whatever) is a calendar of events. One that includes Society events, events that are held within Caledon and events that Society Members are involved in or think might be of interest to the group.
