OK, here's something.
I just joined SL Libertarians today.
Err ... more accurately, my Alt did. When I log as my main I'll get him in there, too. I'm interested in the occasional chat.

Hi, I can't stay long as my computer died and I am using one at the library. I shall return as soon as I can resurrect HAL. But I will quickly mention some books I've read in the not too distant past that might be interesting to people concerned about the theory and practice of government and might begin a discussion some may find worthwhile even if I can't get back right away to contribute:
A CENTURY OF HORRORS by I. Forget. Poses the question "Why is pop culture so much more aware of the crimes of the Nazis than of those of the Communists?" Considering the Nazi regime lasted only about a dozen years and that Naziism (at least in the pure form acknowledged to be Naziism as opposed to hiding behind some other PC label) is for all practical purposes extinct, controlled only a portion of Europe at the height of it's power and murdered perhaps 6 million people (I'm aware the figure is controversial, but beware raising the point if you are so unfortunate as to be a cit of those nations where there is no free speech and you can be imprisoned for questioning the official truth.) whereas Communism covered a vastly larger territory, controlled a lot more people, endured at the height of its scope for more than half a century and did a far more impressive job of murdering its own cits by any realistic measure (at least 85 million total and even on the "murders per unit time" criteria they weren't slackers - if you look closely you can find places and periods that are comparable to the murderousness of the Nazis), and still exist. Frankly I think this book is either poorly written (or possibly poorly translated) and poorly thought out but the question (which has been raised before) is worthy of attention.
THE DARK SIDE OF CAMELOT by Seymour Hersch Very worthwhile book and a remarkable expose on America's junior saint (JFK) by an author who can hardly be discredited as a hater of Democrats. I think exposing the unacknowledged truths of history is a very valuable exercise that can throw considerable light on the present.
OTHER LOSSES by I. Forget This one is even hotter and more shocking than the JFK book and pertains to Eisenhower. If the author is correct (and I have no reason to think he isn't) this is probably the most shocking piece of revisionism of American history ever. It has been virtually ignored by the mainstream. I believe that is because Americans prefer to turn their head rather than acknowledge that that their government may have done horrible things or that their idols may have feet of manure.
See y'all later when my comp is fixed.

New to SL
01-21-2009 17:38
Hi,
I'm very new to SL, and one of the first places I visited was Milton Hayeks temple to liberty, "The Liberty Pub". Of course, I can never find anyone there. After futher searches, I found this group and would very much like to establish contact.
Wondering who I am? Well, my profile covers some things, but I'm a fan of Hienlien, Hayek, Rothbard, Mises, L. Neil Smith and Colonel Jeff Cooper to name a few.

Checking in.

Hi again, y'all. WinBear, thank you. "Temple of Liberty" forsooth. I guess I need to have some events. I could use some volunteers who have predictable RL schedules and dependable computer connections who would be willing to commit to being there for maybe an hour at a time scheduled a week ahead of time. I'd hate to put out party invitations and not have some host on hand in case I couldn't show. I've been working on the facility itself mainly. Spent a lot of time on getting the audio scheduler to work. It worked fine for a couple of months (guessing, I lose track of time) but broke again recently. So for now I'm leaving it on Free Talk Live which is a tradition there that goes back to Gimme Castro's time. I'm working on some of the scripted objects now. And many thanks to SuezanneC for coming to my aid on the scripting forum. In a day or two hopefully I'll get back to the audio. I try to change the video by hand every day. Eventually I hope to have it set up like the audio was. I'll get started on the party idea soon. And try let you know through a group notice as well as here. I added a pretty nice chess board the other day. Come check it out. I've almost finished the stairway. If there is any writer you feel I've slighted by missing them, you better speak up soon. BTW, if you want to host a party, just IM me more than a week ahead of time and promise to be there for at least an hour following the scheduled start time. This is a bit of a stumbling block for me as my schedule is unpredictable.
