I have just posted a special preview version of 1.8.2. Basically, it is a build of 1.8.1.6 with the addition of Avatar LOD support. It is not possible to release a full version of 1.8.2 that residents can use against the main grid, but I assure you that the code in this 1.8.1.9 update is identical to that which we are planning to deploy on Wednesday.
The build is located at http://secondlife.com/community/preview.php. You should install this version in a separate folder from your existing Second Life install. Be aware, though, that it will overwrite the desktop shortcut to point at the new version. You will need to recreate your shortcut to the 1.8.1.6 version should you wish to revert back. With both versions installed, you can do a comparison of the effects of each!
I encourage any user with concerns about Avatar LOD to try the various settings and of course let us know if you encounter any unexpected behavior (i.e. loss other than normal for avatar attachments even when Avatar Detail setting is 100%, etc.) We look forward to your feedback!
