Dear Lifers,

Linden Lab will be making the following addition to the community standards:

-------------------
Object Creations:
Above all, Second Life is a world of creation. Creators and builders of Second Life add to the world, and define its ever-changing landscape. Creators of original work will have the ability to determine how their object is initially used. Object primitives cannot have the creator name changed. Objects with several primitives that are linked CAN have the creator name changed. Linking an object with the intent of changing the creator or disguising its ownership will be considered object theft, and a community standards violation.
-------------------

This addition will be applicable as of Monday, September 22, thus giving people a 1-week amnesty to de-link objects.

On September 22, all cases of object theft will fall under this new standard.

Object Theft Amnesty
09-22-2003 12:04
Dear Lifers,

The amnesty on "stolen" objects has been lifted.

If you have created an object that has been modified to mask the objects creator, please report it using the abuse tool.

As a reminder, be sure to set your objects "no-copy no-modify" if you do not intend for them to be sold, taken, or modified.

Object Theft Clarifications
09-29-2003 10:41
I have gotten a number of requests asking for a "object-theft" clarification.

In short, Item theft occurs when the object being sold is purposely being altered to mask the identity of the creator.
As many objects have multiple creators, it takes some effort for the item to fall under the "object-theft" community standard.

Some examples of object-theft items are:
Object has been de-linked, then re-linked to a miniscule alpha object, name of object creator has been changed.

Object was substantially built by another person, minor additions have been made to alter the object. (E.G. Mr. Ford builds a car, Mr. Chevy repaints the hood a different color, Mr. Chevy may OWN the car, but Mr. Ford is still the creator.)

Some reports of object theft that have NOT been acted on include the following:
Person A gives object to Person B, who then sells it to Person C. Person A never intended for Person B to sell it. The ability to give or sell items that you own is fundamental to Second Life, and cannot be removed. If you have an item that you don't want other people to have, please take the necessary safeguards to keep people from getting those items.
