Forum Attachment Policy and Downtime 12/9/05 - updated!

Earlier today we realized the forum attachments had grown to an unwieldy size for our database and have crafted several new policies for the forums in regards to attachment size (see below).

We will have forum downtime tomorrow morning to attend to these server-intensive maintenance tasks from 9am until 11am PST. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

1. We are implementing a 6 month 'shelf life' on all classified ads (where a large amount of our attachments live). This means you will be able to post your free classified in the SL Forums, but they will only live there for 6 months before being deleted. You are of course welcome to repost any classified that has been deleted.

2. We have also lowered the maximum size limits for attachments for all file types from 4194304 to 3000000 (in bytes) - or approx. 3mb. As a tip, be sure to always "Save for Web" when saving image files so you're not making overly large images! You may of course still post the URL to your images located in other places on the web (photobucket, flikr, yahoo, etc).

This morning we brought down the Forums for maintenance and deleted all but the last 6 months of the Classified forum threads. We are monitoring the attachment usage and will take further steps as needed. Thank you for your patience.
