As the Second Life community continues to grow, we've had lots of requests for island sims, purchased apart from the auction process. We've been looking at ways to meet the demand, and would love your feedback on the following plan. This plan is designed to allow the community to grow outside of the existing mainland. You'll still be able to purchase full sims that are part of the mainland through the auctions.

'Island' sims or groups of sims would be purchased at a fixed price under a plan as described below, and would not be attached to the mainland. So this would be like Cayman or Avalon. Island sims would be expandable at the choice of their owner - you would be able to add simulators to create a larger contiguous land mass at any time. As the mainland expands, Island sims or groups of sims will move outward and remain unconnected to the mainland.

Expansion simulators added to the mainland (recent examples would be Mavericks or Seacliff) would be sold at auction in exactly the same way we do today. Simulators will be added (as is currently done) in response to the growth in overall usage time and the desire by existing residents for new land - these are measurements that can be objectively measured and potentially published for all to see so that land is added in a very predictable and stable way.

Our thinking is that this will give people who want to operate completely outside the mainland community the opportunity to do so in an appropriate way, and will preserve the growth of the mainland community. In many ways, we think this is akin to the balancing act struck between the public internet (mainland) and private intranets (Islands) in the early growth of the net.

Please take a minute and answer the poll in the economy and land forum.
