The new Infohubs are designed to be public spaces for use by the entire Second Life community. In the tradition of the town square or public commons, these local spaces will provide a central point of congregation and communication exchange between residents. We are committed to building traffic in these areas and giving the surrounding businesses and services the opportunity to benefit from their increasing use.
Since the Infohubs will primarily be a service for the community, we feel that the community should have a hand in their design. To this end, we are seeking construction proposals from resident builders. Currently, Ben Linden has put a default design template in place at each of the Infohub locations. The current design features a few primary components that should be included in your proposal should you decide to participate:
1) Space for two information kiosks (see current Infohub builds for specs)
2) A Lindex ATM machine
The rest is up to you. Please be aware that size of the Infohubs varies greatly from region to region. We are looking for prim efficient builds of different shapes and themes. You may want to visit some Infohub locations inworld before submitting your proposal.
We will be choosing 5 different resident designs and will place them at selected locations across Second Life next month.
If you are interested in submitting a proposal, please send the following to Jesse Linden via email at jesse@lindenlab.com:
1) A mock-up of your proposed design (using either actual models or photos).
2) A short write-up of your design concept
We will accept proposals until 5pm on Wednesday, January 11th. We'll review all submitted proposals and make our decision by Monday January 16th at 5pm. We will then announce the winners in this announcement thread. The resident groups who win the jobs will then have until January 20th to complete the final construction.
These Infohubs will become a permanent part of the Infrastructure of Second Life. Each design will feature a plaque with the name of the design team, information about the build, and any contact information (links to websites or landmarks) the creators wish to include. Since the Infohubs will be high traffic areas for newcomers and existing residents alike as Second Life continues to grow, this is a great opportunity to showcase your design team’s skills.
Thanks for your participation and good luck!
