The SL Greeter Program provides an individual, personalized experience for new Residents (Arrivals), proving to them what we already know - that SL is full of interesting people, places and experiences and also encourages veteran Residents to personally introduce new Arrivals to SL.
If you're approved to be a SL Greeters, you'll get to create and post your personalized Greeter Experience information and photo on the SL website to appear when you are in-world and in active Greeter mode. During the registration process every new account signing up for Second Life will be prompted to select a Greeter.
When an Arrival who has chosen your Greeter Experience arrives in the Welcome Area, you will get an IM with their SL name and they will get your calling card and further instructions. If you are offering to show off a specific location, they will also get a landmark. Then it's time for your Greeter Experience to begin!
Being a Greeter doesn't have to mean a permanent relationship with every new Arrival, it's simply a way for you to share your specialized SL Experience with a new Resident.
