The specular lighting effect caused by the sun in the new shaders is... well, nice in some aspects, and not so nice in others. My main complaint is that it doesn't appear on alpha textures, meaning that any objects that use a combination of alpha and non-alpha textures will have an uneven appearance due to the inconsistent application of this effect. Case in point (left has shaders off, right has shaders on): These pics are of two boxes side-by-side. The left box is opaque, while the right one has 2% transparency. Notice the mismatched brightness with shaders on, since the specular highlight is only seen on the non-alpha box. Here, all the head textures are non-alpha except for the main "forehead" texture (since multiple layers are needed for the eye-coloring effect). The specular highlight shows up on all the prims except this one, causing it to appear darkened in comparison. Is this slated to be fixed before deployment on Wednesday? Or is it simply not feasible? Because I'm worried about the detrimental effect this will have on the appearance of many objects that are out there.

From: Eep Quirk I take it you filed a bug report? Indeed. A week or two ago, as a matter of fact.

Doesn't matter now Beatfox, they're all gone.
Ladies and gentlemen, you may return to your GeForce2 MX200s.

OK, good, but it was never brought up in the forums (I post my bug reports there for others to be aware of, comment on, debate, etc) so I never noticed. I think public bug exposure--especially in preview--helps in bringing more attention to a bug, getting others to test it, file more bug reports about it, expand on the info, etc. I just wish we had access to the bug database to comment on bugs DIRECTLY instead of having to use this forum, or the SL Wiki (which is damn annoying to edit--specifically tables) to do this...

I guess I'm nitpicking, since 1.9.1 seems to be shedding most of its new graphics functionality anyway, but isn't your example showing inerpolated per-vertex diffuse lighting, not specular lighting?

From: paulie Femto I guess I'm nitpicking, since 1.9.1 seems to be shedding most of its new graphics functionality anyway, but isn't your example showing inerpolated per-vertex diffuse lighting, not specular lighting? It is vertex-shaded specular lighting. It changes depending on your camera angle.
