People who create light objects can set a a value for the distance of the light effect, how's bout lettin users set a light strength value, so if you find that turning on the lighting in preference seems overly colorful and garish, you can turn it down without having to turn it all the way off. Value could run from 0 to 1, 1 gives you full light effect, less tones it down without making it go away completely

Isn't that what the fall off value does? Setting it to 0 seems to make it equal brightness althroughout the sphere of influence, while setting it to its maximum of 2 seems to limit the light to the immediate area around the prim with a very rapid fall off to a subtile lighting on the surroundings.

Fey, I think Sue wants a client preference/option for overall light object (not ambient, which a setting for already exists) brightness.

The fall off value is set by the object creator, right? Not by the viewer? My suggestion is for a setting controlled by the viewer.

My suggestion is for each of us to have a setting in preferences to control the degree to which objects light setting affect our display, similar to how we have a setting for chat bubbles opacity.

Rather than having only an on off switch, I suggest having a dimmer switch.

So the object builder sets the light how they want, as at present in the preview.

Viewers who love the pronouced light effects turn their light intensity setting up, viewers who prefer it more moderated turn their light intensity setting down.

--- heh ---

I misread Eep's post at first, he got my point, making this redundant, but it's 2:41 in the morning now and my longwinded version of what Eep said was hard work and I ain't deleting it now.
