Just wanted to post a note saying that Second Life works on my Gentoo build.

Here's a uname...

Linux 2.6.14-gentoo-r5 #3 PREEMPT Mon Dec 26 19:57:08 CST 2005 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

I run the "alpha" or ~x86 version of Gentoo and update about once every two weeks.

I'm using the Nvidia native drivers.

I just unpacked and untared second life and ran it, went extremely well.

Wheeee! ;-) /hug Tofu!!

I'd like to elaborate on that...

When baking my own Gentoo-NonBloated(tm), I had issues with X11/Nvidia/$mycard=Geforce 5700 not being able to do 32 bit/8bit Alpha. I found that this can be solved by compiling the libsdl with the USE-Flag "directfb" and putting the following into my xorg.conf (Section "Screen";):
CODE

DefaultColorDepth 24
DefaultDepth 24
DefaultFbBPP 32

as previously suggested by Zi.
I further enabled framebuffer in the kernel but disabled nvidiafb and agpgart to make that work. And Hey, I'm on up to 13fps on a typical LUG meeting, and even much more if tightly enclosed in a huge black sphere! ;-)

I still have problems with ALSA (and won't do OSS, for the sake of progress), the Client crashes when switching Mute Audio off. Esound is not an option for me, since the environmental sound is primary good for "Who start's typing in which direction _now_?". And with the delay esound provides, this information gets as useless as VoIP in the 90s.
So I have to live without the crickets and typing noise for now...

But Media streaming is not affected by that! You can listen to media streams, Radio, DJs, Live Concerts. All without unmuting the audio. (Didn't know that before...)

Just my 6$L,
