DO NOT update to the latest Xorg (7.1.0-18 from Debian/unstable for me) and expect the fglrx drivers to keep working. Xorg has changed the way it versions itself and (from what I can gather from the 'net) fglrx has been using the wrong version information but working because Xorg used to supply the info differently.

Namely, fglrx will start complaining that it needs Xorg 7.1.0.0 (protocol?? version) and can only find 1.3.0.0 (release version??) and will bork to a text console.

If you get this, to at least get in to a GUI, substitute 'vesa' for 'fglrx' in your xorg.conf, then set about a rollback of your xorg update (or do what I am doing and be too busy this week to bother with a rollback and sit on a vesa driver [no SL of course] waiting for AMD/ATI to wake up) ;-P

Latest driver (8.36.5) doesn't fix it.

Any better ideas for avoiding a rollback are wlecome ;-)

(I normally don't run Debian/unstable but needed a bugfix urgently, which pulled in other stuff, which pulled in other stuff) :-(
