Hi again,

I am now trying to run the new windows secondlife version using 'WINE' under linux.

The problem is that when I run the installer - 'wine setup.exe' it tells me I am running under a 'LIMITED' user account and I need to be administrator - this is the same even when I am logged in as root.

Any body tried this, or know of a fix?

Oops, I thought you were looking for advice on a good Merlot to drink when SLing ... :p

Sorry I can't advise... I'm watching this forum carefully, but still keep a windoze box for games... including, for the moment, SL.

I am a linux supporter thru and thru, somebody must have successfully ran this under linux using WINE.

marco <<<< reaches for his large(ish) bottle of merlot looking for inspiration.........hoping somebody out there has successfully pre-empted him!!!

Marco,

Always a good idea to look at AT LEAST the first page of topics before posting this type of question, but that's ok... just mentioning because this question has been asked and answered several times.

Just change your winecfg settings and set WINE to Win98, run the install, then set it back to WinXP (or whatever you prefer to have it as).

Good luck! :)

Thanks - but one last hurdle!

Thanks Val,

I have done that and it installed fine, now when I run it (under wine) I get the message directx is not installed, if I click continue anyway it just crashes out.

I have downloaded the direcxtx software but it wont install into wine.

Anybody any clues?

Marco-

I have a similar problem (as do a few others). Try running wine as root and see if it works.

I don't know why it only seems to affect a handful of us, the 1.09 client didn't require root but the 1.10 does

You're welcome! This one seems to vary a bit more for some reason... For me, I had the same result, but ONLY on the initial run attempt. Past that I was able to start SL via WINE properly with no erorrs. I believe DirectX is mostly for the initial hardware detect. I definitely do not run SL as root..
