Hi,

I have been unable to post or preview replies for about the last day or so.

I've been trying to give some help to Cheewha Palen regarding "Starting SL in Fedora 9 PLZ HELP", but every time I post or preview I get plain white page that says only:

-==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==-
Not Found
The requested URL /newreply.php was not found on this server.
-==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==-

What's up?? Is anybody else able to reply?

Forum traffic has been quite high the last few days, and I just opened a reply screen for the thread you wanted to reply to just fine, so I'm thinking the problem is probably on your end. Anything change recently? Browser, firewall, ISP?

No, nothing has changed here. I was actually expecting my initial post to give the same or a similar rebuke. I can't wait to see what will happen with this one...

OK. Preview worked. Now to post it...

Curiouser and curiouser.

Did you say you managed to post a reply to Cheewah? 'Cause now that entire thread is gone!

Must be some bit rot in the forum database.

They do this from time to time. Just clear your cache and cookies, and if that doesn't work, you'll have to wait. They don't have any way to report any kind of transient website outage (although, I think that would be a really good idea!)

...and curiouser and curiouser.

I guess Nika meant s/he was able to open the Reply screen. I can do that, but when I try to preview or post my reply to the origingal question, I get the 404 screen I copied.

Apparently there's something about that particular post, 'cause I just tried again with the same result.

Hopefully Cheewah is still watching the forum. I'll try to post a new thread with my answer.

Sorry for all the seeming spam, but I finally discovered something about the problem I was having posting an answer to Cheewha. I wouldn't say I understand what's happening, but I know what triggers it.

When I tried to post my answer in a separate, new thread, I got the same result, which made me think maybe it was something in the content of my reply that was triggering the problem. So I took one paragraph at a time of my reply, pasted it into the editing area and clicked Preview Post. When I got to the last paragraph, the error occurred. So I looked at that paragraph and made a hunch about what in it was upsetting the applecart. My first guess panned out, it was the sequence of three periods followed immediately by a slash. Putting a single space between the three dots and the slash prevented the problem.

Go figure.
