Edit: I did some debugging and saw the SecondLife.exe was trying an illegal memory read. On a whim I ran wine as root and sure enough the login dialog popped up. Not sure if that's a wine or SL problem.

Hi. I have the same frequent crashing Linux as most everybody else so I downloaded and installed the win viewer.

Using the same version of wine (0.9.8) that worked with the 1.09 viewer, it didn't launch (it displayed the "detecting hardware" box and then quit).

I upgraded to the latest pre compiled wine (0.9.13) and it did the same thing

so I compiled my own wine 0.9.14 and still have the same thing.

Cedega (an older version as I stopped subscribing) gets to the "no DX installed" dialog but when I say launch anyway it blacks the whole screen out and then crashes.

If I remove my settings.ini file, wine asks the directx question but then just crashes.

I see this, does it matter?:
INFO: Initializing window...
WARNING: No ARB WGL render texture extensions
fixme:wgl:wglGetPixelFormatAttribivARB unsupported 2007 WGL Attribute

Any ideas as far as gfx and sound settings?

Thanks

On cedega 4.2 I have SL up and running. Make sure that the fullscreen option is switched off.

This is bizarre.

have you tried (as root):

chown -R <your_username> /home/<your_username>/.wine

(or wherever your .wine and fake c_drive is)?

I read that you have to change mode to "Win98".

I've had it working nice and happy since the update. No crashes. I do have sound disabled, however, since ALSA and OSS support was a bit sketchy. I did experience problems logging in under various sound settings.

For the time being, I'm running it as emulated WinNT under wine 0.9.8 (revision 1). Video and Audio drivers are both set to "emulated" with no driver emulation. Also have it in a virtual desktop, so fullscreen modes aren't an issue.

And to repeat, my wine build spec from portage (I suspect these are ./configure line options as well) --

[ebuild R ] app-emulation/wine-0.9.8-r1 +X +alsa +arts +cups -debug +esd +gif +glut +jack +jpeg +lcms -ldap -nas +ncurses +opengl +oss -scanner +truetype +xml

Edit: Additional information -- I did not require root access, nor changing my version spec, at any time during installation or running. So, ehm....

You have to switch to Win98 when you install SL-Win. Afterwards switch it back to Win XP.

Also, I have the latest Wine in my /etc/portage/package.keywords here, and so far it's stable.

Just FWIW I did not have to change anything to install SL-Win under Wine. Installs and runs fine as a normal user with Win 2000 as the version.

It may be a wine version issue.

I have the standard wine from suse 10, all OK. The new 1.10.0.34 is also OK, I now have avatar vertex plus all options enabled.

I run with windows XP, sound alsa emulated twice in the wincfg Audio tab. It SAYS I have OSS (autodetect) but choosing Alsa gives less splutter.

No patches installed for wine.
