I'm running 1.18.4.3 on Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy). I also have the latest 8.42.3 ATI driver. I get great performance in SL until I try to open a texture. Then everything comes to a grinding halt and it usually crashes. This issue tends to make building and accepting pictures from people problematic.

Did you try to delete the cache yet? it might be a corrupted cache file that keeps crashing your client.

I just tried that and it didn't help matters. And this is the 1.18.5 client now!

Just for completeness, this must have been a problem with the 8.42.3 ATI driver on my box. I've just installed the 8.433 ATI driver (aka Catalyst 7.11), and the texture problem has gone away.
