Its saying that I must have administrator priveleges to install SecondLife. So the choice we had before we don't have again. Some how I doubt the wine project is going to move quickly to fix this problem with wine.

I just did that

Wine Preview is running fine, for me, though I haven't tried the Real Thing yet...

I also got decent sound, with an unpatched wine, using ALSA as my sound (although autodetect said OSS is installed), and two times "emulate" on the winecfg tab for sound.

I must admit I did not try to install it from Linux onto a Windows drive; I installed it into the wine "C:" drive.

And for me, it says you must be an "administrator" to install. Looks like its off to windows :/

Okay, I found a fix for this.

Use winecfg to set your windows version to Windows 98.
Run the installer.
Use winecfg to set your windows version back to it's previous setting.
Run SL.

The trick? Win 98 didn't HAVE limited vs. admin accounts. This trick works for a lot of games in Cedega, too.

Not sure if this helps anyone... I was able to install the Windows client via the Crossover Office version of WINE perfectly... the I run it via the standard WINEHQ WINE usual.

I cannot say much for performance because I am remote, but the installation that failed through normal WINE was a success through Cross Over and I can at least get to the login screen via the normal WINE.

Thanks.

If it installed normally and runs crappily, maybe you have it set to run as Win98 (per Darkside's advice which is easier than mine, haha). Run winecfg and set it to WinXP now that its installed and see if that halps. If it's already WinXP, well... *shrugs*

Makes no diffrence, but then, I got a pretty low end system for this kin d of stuff, so its probably just the machine. but the linux client, if it runs, runs better/faster/smoother

I got it to install using the "win98" trick but it won't work.

Every time I try to connect it tells me it can't establish a secure connection to the server and to check my clock.

winecfg, change your sound options to 'emulated'

The linux client crashes just as soon as I log in so I downloaded the windows client. I didn't have any problems installing the windows client in wine as winxp. I tried to edit my avitar and my head turned black like my hair and my torso is a brown red color. Is there a way to fix this?

Oops!

I chose a skin clothes hair etc with NO alpha channel.

It is an alpha channel bug.. transparent stuff comes out funny

To fix it, go into windows or Linux, change the distorted clothes a bit (and back), and the go into wine, and change nothing...

Cheap workaround :p

Yeah, I get that too. Every time I try to edit my appearance under wine it turns me into a man ! And a red one too.

I just have to hope the Linux client stays up long enough for me to do any changes, then switch back.

I was having the same problem (no admin account access), and this fix worked beautifully for me. Thanks!!!
