Hi everyone!

There's a new Preview Linux Client which will connect to the preview grid - grab it from
http://secondlife.com/community/preview.php and remember to start it with --siva so it connects to the preview grid!

We'll have a new main-grid Linux Client release soon, with some minor additional fixes/goodness.

Here are the aggregated release notes since the last non-preview Linux Client:

Release Notes for Second Life 1.12.1 (linux-52190) September 12, 2006
=====================================
Linux client fixes:
* Improved default Unicode font rendering
** Easier for user to substitute own fallback unicode.ttf file
* Improved alt-drag workaround
* Bundle libvorbisenc, libcurl, more
* Fix pasting from SL into KDE applications
* Embed icon for the window manager
* Fix clicking on the world immediately after a desktop switch

Release Notes for Second Life 1.12.1 (linux-51916) September 2, 2006
=====================================

* Cannot Alt Zoom (or Ctrl Drag)
* Stop the client logging to syslog
* Crash when switching from fullscreen mode
* sometimes hang or crash on linux client shutdown
* Key repeating not working correctly
* Lots of 'Failed to set locale en_US.iso8859-1' warnings
* "$L" not appearing before Linden $$ balance in upper right corner of the screen.

Please also bundle libgcc, or compile it without the specific 3.4 dependency.

Somewhat puzzled...

If I understand rightly, the switch to 1.12.1 in general happens today. Is the preview grid isolated from the main grid, i.e. on it, will I not be able to interact with those on the main grid? If that's the case, I hope it isn't long until there's a 1.12.1 client for Linux that we can use on the main grid.

That's right.

We're rolling a fresh Linux release for the main grid right now. Today's preview release mostly exists to give our Linux residents a way to get onto Second Life while the main grid is down so they don't feel isolated from the fun. :)

I propose a LSB (Linux Standards Base) dependency for SL, if it's possible and feasible.
Many distributions today support LSB, so it would give a common base. All other libs should be included, packaged.

WOO and indeed HOO!
*click*
Yarr! :)

Thanks you guys! :-)
Time to go play with it and see if I can break it ;)

*edit*
Grr - the new client appears to eat the keyboard - so I can no longer press <CTRL><ALT><Arrow Key> to swap virtual desktops... hopefully this is something I can tweak someplace or else it's *really* going to annoy the hell out of me... bah... an annoyance already and I've not even managed to connect to the grid yet. *meep*

64bit Users

64bit users you will need the 32bit copy of the following files in SecondLife/lib:
libSDL-1.2.so.0
libuuid.so.1

That is all.

A side note, will SL always be using oss/FMOD or will a more up to date sound system be introduced? ALSA or user configured? Perhaps openAL on the SL side?

SL will use ALSA if OSS fails, or ESD if those both fail.

No plans - it'd be a significant inventment of time for no clear gain right now.
