Grid downtime CANCELLED - Wednesday, June 7, 2006
Hi, everyone.

Because some server-side fixes aren't quite ready yet, we're cancelling the grid downtime Wednesday morning. There will still be an optional (but recommended) client software update available for download on Wednesday. Release notes about the client software update will be posted here on Tuesday, June 6

Do you think this will mean an 'optional' update for us linux users too?

No idea honestly. I suppose we could always ask the Linden's. Judging from the release notes scheduled for 1.10.2 alone, I would hope that the client-only update includes the client "fixes" that where suppose to be released, and hopefully those would include the Linux client.

How do we do that?

Lets ask the Linden's, oh errr I can't get onto secondlife - Linux only in this household! If anyone can IM a Linden in game and pose the question. Or I suppose I could email Martin Linden again. But as per my last correspondence of last week, (quoted below) I might not get a definitive answer.

Anybody with any intel on linux version release on Wed please let us know.

Greetings,

Thanks for your inquiry.

Second Life does not currently have a Linux version. Some Second Life
residents have reported success running Second Life under Windows-
emulation software such as Wine.

Regards,

Martin Linden

Oddly .. I can get into SL just fine, though all 13 systems here only run linux as well. I don't suppose the 10 in the rack count though, since they don't have monitors and keyboards.

But if I see a Linden whom I think can answer that and who isn't just a volunteer help person I will see about getting an answer.

Greetings,

Thanks for your inquiry.

We have all seen quite enough of Martin Linden's misinformed answer, there really is nothing to be gained by posting it again and again like some sort of trophy. Instead of moaning about it, you could actually follow Martins suggestion and run the Windows client with Wine.

We will have the opportunity to ask Karen Linden about the status of the Linux Client at our LUG meet, and we can also ask her about the overall recognition of the native client at LL. There is no point in rubbing in the mistake of a hotline employee who most probably has been informed of his blooper already.

Please keep it civil and try to help the Linux Community to be viewed as mature and professional as they should be :)

I really, really really don't get it ... There have been crashes, okay, but does that justify a *mandatory* update? If people don't update, they will keep crashing, but that's entirely their own problem ... Either LL doesn't trust their users to be capable of downloading a file themselves or there's more to that, like a security problem in the old client, which they don't want to diclose now ...

*sighs* More questions for Karen, I guess.

It may have to do with data alignment. Though that is just a guess.

This would require a server / sim update which in turn would mean downtime ;)

Also greatly depends on if they are doing updates, or feature adds. If they add features I can see why they would need to do a total update. I have a feeling as well they add features so everyone has to use a client that can accept these new features as creating backward compatibility for their client would take more work when most people would want to upgrade anyway. Typically such a thing is not used in alpha clients anyway as it is more important to add new features than to keep reverse compatibility.

Again... everything that adds new features a client must respond to would mean, they would have to restart the grid / sims. Maybe they have already done so during yesterday's rolling updates, but in this case, the new features are already in the grid, just can't be seen with the old client. This in turn means, that backwards compatibility is working, so no need for a mandatory update.

I certainly hope so, but I can't predict :) If the client gets updated in time, we can only hope that it does not crash as frequently as the current version, so the linux community can attend the LUG meet on native Linux clients, as it should be.
