Now when I say Linux newbie I mean it. I'm clueless. I'm a complete Windows muppet used to just clicking a couple of buttons and watching the magic machine do it's thing. But I finally got fed up enough with windows that I caved in to DH and said if I could get SL to work I would switch. I'm happy to spend the following months learning all about the ins and out of Linux but in the meantime I want to play SL!
I tried half a dozen different Distros (see I learned a new word!) and while I'm sure someone more knowledgeable would have been fine I wasn't - it was mostly the Nvidia driver and all that 'enter this and type that' and without the driver I couldn't get SL to work. ENVY by the way was pretty impressive, with that I was able to load SL on a couple of distros and play for all of 60 seconds before it crashed. I was doing something wrong, something newbieish.
So I came to Sabayon.
All I did was go to it's Portato and do a search for nvidia - DH said "click that" and I clicked nvidiaclock (it was something like that, it wasn't nvidia settings and that was the only other thing that came up in search)
Loaded up SL and played. And played. It was wonderful and so easy with hardly any scariness involved at all.
Now the technical bits.
My machine
2x intel core 2 duo CPU E6750@2.66ghz
main memory 2gb
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS
OS Sabayon Linux - http://www.sabayonlinux.org/
Second Life
Plays like a dream - better so far than with XP.
Preferences/shaders - Only enable bump mapping and shiny is not grayed out
Avatar rendering - only normal is clickable.
Music works fine but I havn't tried video yet.
Inventory search works fine.
Remember - Newb. But if I left anything out let me know.
Hope this helps someone.
Edit.
Oh and it works fine with Sabayon on DH's computer too
Intel Pentium 3.4Ghz
512 DDR
160 GB
Nvidia GeForce FX5500
