I have recently re-installed my linux ubuntu system. I am now using 8.10 version, i believe my old version was the 8.04 version. On this version SL worked perfectly and i had no issues. Since the re-install and update I have been having major issues getting SL up and running properly. I can log into SL but very little rezz's and takes a very long time to see even my own avi! I have installed all the necesary graphics drivers and my internet connection appears to work fine with other applications. I'm tottally stumped as to what the problem could be!!

I would greatly appreciate any input/ideas that anyone has!

Thanks

Diesel

hmm ... re-check the graphics drivers (e.g., what performance does glxgears report?) and consider to disable ubuntu's 3D desktop effects (compiz) before running SL. If you have a backup, restore the SL configuration of the old setup (maybe you had made some adjustments which helped the performance on your specific hardware):
mv /home/username/.secondlife /home/username/.secondlife.new
cp -a
/path/to/backup/home/username/.secondlife /home/username/ # (replace the non-highlighted parts by whatever's appropriate)

Maybe you could also check what setting the "bandwidth" slider in preferences has? If that's set way too low, that could cause these symptoms...

Does Ubuntu come with NVidia drivers, and stay up to date with the latest? I know in Fedora (and every time I update my kernel) I always have to use the NVidia installer from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

Ubuntu does not come with nVidia's proprietary drivers (which you need for 3D rendering). However, it makes them available through the Restricted Driver Manager (System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers if you are using Gnome). Be sure you have the Restricted repositories enabled in your Software Sources.

I just tried to install the nVidia drivers in (64-bit) Fedora through the livna/rpmfusion repositories. What a NIGHTMARE! Couldn't get them to work no matter what I did. Segmentation faults everywhere. So it's back to running nVidia's installer each time I update my kernel. Oh well. I can continue to live with that I guess. Good luck on Ubuntu. I hope it works better.

Installing proprietary nvidia drivers hads so far always worked very well for me in ubuntu, and I have a 64bit system installed...
