From the very first version of SL, that I have tried (1.10.4.4), I've managed to see CPU dedicating like 98% of it's power to SL, but that's basically no big deal... But in 1.13.2.11 the CPU usage peaks ou even higher, and thus blocking any activity on SL and/or my computer.
The problem is, that I can't put my finger on it. I mean because those "peaks" are generally random. Sometimes it happends on region crossings, sometimes on camera focus, sometimes in chat... Decreasing mesh detail doesn't help, and neither does lowering the graphic details...
Got any ideas on this one? 'cause I'm all out of them...

Does this also happen in the First Look client?

yep. Same there.
Of course I've forgotten the specs: - AMD Athlon 64 3000 - GeForce FX 6600 PCIe - 2GB RAM - Ubuntu Edgy (32-bit version).

Sounds like the same problem as what happened to me.It's not hard to recover from, just tedious. Drop to tty1-6 and kill the processes via bash and you should be able to recover.
