I'm trying the current client (1.12.3.4) on my Ubuntu Edgy system. Interacting with the world with the mouse is broken in a number of ways. First, right-clicking on things doesn't work. Second, holding down the Alt key to move the camera doesn't work; the cursor changes when I press the Alt key, but dragging the mouse doesn't move the camera at all. Clicking on the UI buttons and menus does work, as does right-click and dragging things within the inventory window, so this is presumably a client issue rather than an issue of mouse clicks and drags not getting to the SL client.

I can't help with the right-clicking, but I can get alt-drags to work for you. The problem is, alt+mouse is overrided by the system, because it's used to move windows (you can alt+click in any spot in a window to move it around the screen). To get rid of that in Ubuntu (and prolly other stuff that runs Gnome):
1. Go to the System menu, then preferences. 2. Pick "Windows", it's at the very bottom on my list. 3. Under "Movement Key", change it to "Super". This means instead of using alt+click to move your window, you'll use Super (usually the dreaded Windows key; it's pretty rare to find a PC keyboard newer than 15 years that doesn't have it) and clicking to do it. I think that's easier anyhow; it's nice to give that key some use in Linux. ![]() But on non-maximized windows (even SL!), you can use Alt+click (well, Super+click once you've changed it) anywhere in the window to move it around on the screen; meaning, you don't have to reach for the titlebar first just to move it! Also in that window, I'd suggest changing double-click to rollup the window; it takes some getting used to (you'll have to actually hit the maximize button to maximize a window now), but it can be really handy to roll a window out of your way for a minute; it's great for stuff like a calculator; set it to be on top, then roll it up when you're not using it for a second! God, I love Linux. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

...but I`m running KUbuntu. [KDE, not Gnome.] How do I do this? Oh, sorry, I didn't realize that. I don't know then, sorry. ![]() |

Thanks for the tip!
![]() I just installed Ubuntu at home on my PC laptop, and wondered how to get around this problem. I'm looking forward to life in SL on Linux (as it is...) |

That`s OK; you weren`t talking to me anyway. ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh, right, sorry. ![]() I can't really tell you how to do it in Kubuntu, because I don't use KDE (intentionally). There's bound to be a way, though; just look in the KDE-equivalent to the control panel/preferences menu for something along the lines of Window Preferences (doesn't KDE put it all in one window, instead of separate programs like Gnome?). The key (heh. key) is to change the movement key (possibly dragging key, or maybe even window control key if they're wanting to sound technical) from Alt to Super (9 times outta 10 the Super key is going to be the Windows key, unless you've changed it deep in the system). I can't get more specific than that, because I've never dealt with KDE more than about a half hour. Sorry. I'm just addicted to Gnome. ![]() BTW, Karen, always glad to help a Linden. Especially on Linux. ![]() BTW, do I get a Karen bear now? ![]() ![]() |

It's still completely broken, BTW. I have since installed the updated SL client (1.12.3.6) and some Ubuntu updates (including a new fglrx driver); no help. SL works fine on my desktop Ubuntu system running Dapper, so it's something specific to Edge, to this system, or both.

Has anyone ever found a solution to this? The problem doesn't lie with the alt key being overridden by GNOME, as that was the first thought I had too - changing it did diddly squat. In fact, it doesn't seem to matter what window manager is used under X on edgy - I've tried Gnome, KDE, even FLUXBOX, and alt-dragging the mouse didn't work on any of them. SL itself works fine, if you consider being unable to move your camera with the mouse or being unable to right-click to bring up the pie menu 'fine'.
Considering Ubuntu is one of the most popular distributions, I'm surprised this bug has managed to go on for so long. It doesn't really sound like it's a bug in the client, but rather somewhere Ubuntu mucks up the default settings for X. I'm not discounting any possibility at this point, though. Surely someone has got it working on Ubuntu by now? |

I've messed with it quite a bit, and I still can't get it to work. I've tried exporting some SDL environment stuff (some other posts around the net said that sometimes SDL tries to use the wrong device), and that doesn't seem to fix it. I've tried editing Xorg.conf to use various mouse settings, to no success. In fact, nothing seems to have changed at all, either on my system, or SL (I've rebooted and/or ctrl-alt-backspace). SL seems to be registering left-clicks, as the tutorial "pressing left-click does blah blah" comes up, but alt-dragging to pan the camera around an object still does not work. I can click on menus in SL fine. Right-Clicking does not seem to register at all.

Failing to right-click is usually a graphics driver bug (as unobvious as that sounds!). Mouse-panning can have the same root cause.

Hmm, do you have any suggestions for what I could look for? I'm not a linux expert by any means, but I know my way around a bit. Right now, I have the ati proprietary FGLRX drivers installed. My computer is a laptop, with the notorious ATI Xpress200M chipset that requires me to disable my dedicated GPU memory in bios and share system ram instead when running in linux (due to a bug in the linux fglrx driver that has been around for over a year and a half). I'd switch to using the regular ATI driver, but I assume SL's performance would be completely unusable, if it even ran.
