I spent a couple of days, but got SL running on a 64 bit version of Fedora 10 with an nVidia driver.

One small problem, I forgot how I solved the first part of the problem of it wanting /home/user/.kde/share/services (user is in place of the account name). I know I did mkdir /home/user/.kde/share/services but I did several things so not sure about that but I remember adding in the extra kde packages like the ones for older kde support.

I extracted the viewer to /home/user/SecondLife

Ran Terminal and did:
cd SecondLife
./secondlife
Saw libgobject-2.0.so.0 missing so did
sudo yum install libgobject-2.0.so.0
Needed to repeat ./secondlife twice more to find I needed to do these:
sudo yum install libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0
sudo yum install libXt.so.6

The next error dealt with mozilla-runtime-linux-i686:
For the mozilla-runtime-linux-i686 error:
I downloaded and installed firefox2-2.0.0.18-1.fc8.remi.i386.rpm from
rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/10277442/com/firefox2-2.0.0.18-1.fc8.remi.i386.rpm.html
(You don't want to actually run firefox2 btw but it takes care of the problem for SL and shouldn't affect the 64 bit version that you have installed.)

Now, it runs fine and without the "32 bit" driver additions. Hope this helps someone else. Sorry that I can't remember how I fixed the kde share part but I hope someone will share how they did it.

Not working for me...
11-28-2008 13:02
An upgrade of Fedora 9, to Fedora 10... gives me this when I try to run second life. Can anyone help? I mean, the instructions are to install the 32 bit libs... but which ones?

You are running the Second Life Viewer on a x86_64 platform. The
most common problems when launching the Viewer (particularly
'bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: not found' and 'error while
loading shared libraries') may be solved by installing your Linux
distribution's 32-bit compatibility packages.
For example, on Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linuxes you might run:
$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk ia32-libs-kde ia32-libs-sdl

Like I started off with, I forgot how I fixed the first error of "Warning: Did not register secondlife:// handler with KDE: Directory /home/gdo/.kde/share/services does not exist."

I know I first tried to manually create /home/gdo/.kde/share/services does not exist. but that did not work. I also logged in once with KDE but that did not seem to work either--though I did make sure to use the control panel there to make firefox the default web browser since that was needed to get firefox to launch instead of the default kde browser). I ran YUMEX and installed the extra KDE packages. I do remember that what ever I ended up doing for that seemed to need a reboot for it to register.

Installing the firefox2 rpm did get rid of "./secondlife: line 110: 6694 Segmentation fault LD_LIBRARY_PATH="`pwd`"/lib:"`pwd`"/app_settings/mozilla-runtime-linux-i686:"${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}" $LL_WRAPPER bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin --channel "Second Life Release Candidate" --settings". If you used the GUI installer like I did for that, it ran differently than before and did it in the background which took some time plus a second process kicked in to check it so if you didn't give it enough time, it might not have been installed when you tried it again.
