CPU Intensive?

Is it me or is it a little CPU intensive?
Uses roughly 95-99% according to top.

Is anyone else getting this?
And if so is it normal?
Not having used the win32 version outside of wine, and even then not for a while, I'm slightly unsure about this.

Thanks

Well, SL does run in a spinlock (while(true) {}) main loop, so it will consume as many resources as are availible.

However, I didnt notice it pulling resources away from other applications on my machines -- what is the problem exactly?

On my machine Firefox and Kontact seems to suffer from SL's heavy CPU use

Near-100% CPU usage is normal (in most games, not just SL). If it's implemented under linux, you can try the '-cooperative [ms]' command-line option to give up some time. (You'll have to hack the 'secondlife' script to use it, since it doesn't pass on the script's own parameters to the SL bin.)

It is very CPU intensive, as are most similar applications.
The way I see it is this: Anytime SL uses less than whatever processing time the system is willing to give it, that's lost FPSs. The more processor it uses, the faster it can run.

Yes even the windows version uses everything it can get it's hands on.
I have not tried major multitasking with Sl running yet. but I had no problem running kopete and firefox and useing them while Sl was running.
Don't know how much system memory you have but if it is for some reason swaping that might be the problem SL will use alot of system memory (Have only paid atention to the windows version so far)

If you look at "xosview" or "top" while SL is running, the amount of real memory it is using is not that high. I have the entire system, including X, fvwm, SLlinux and opera with many tabs open running, and the used/shared memory is around 350 MB as reported by "xosview".

I have not experienced any noticable lag in other normal programs (browser etc) while SLlinux is running.

I have 1 GB RAM and 1 GB swap, an NVidia FX 5200 with 128MB and an AMD Duron 1800.

Hmm not showing my signature, so much for putting my system stats in there.

Anyway, I've tested it in the windows version today and yesterday, and yes, it's similar there.
At least I fixed my Avatar from something that looked like Jesus.

I have 1 GB RAM, an NVidia 6600GT with 128MB and a P4 3GHz Northwood.
