After finally getting the client compiled under x86_64 gentoo I always get

Unable to connect to server.
Could not request domain name: userserver.dmz.lindenlab.com

Is there anything I misunderstood?
Please help.

SLDev is probably the best place to discuss self-compiled problems.
However, your client totally shouldn't be looking at the dmz grid - I can't really imagine why it would be trying to, unless you explicitly compiled with GRID=dmz or are running with the --dmz option. If you can fix this, you'd hopefully have more luck.

Thank you for the hint. I didn't look for compile options right now. I just took an ebuild from elsewhere and run it without any tweaking.

Will look for when I'm back home.

As a work-around, you can probably run secondlife with the '--agni' command-line option to connect to the main grid, but ideally the problem should be reported upstream to your builder, as trying to connect to the DMZ grid will fail for everyone if it's truly the default on that build.

With some builds you can choose the grid at the login screen from a drop down list. If I remember correctly, the choice is being remembered for the next time you run SL.

I thought I remember posting this suggestion too but apparently not: You may wish to consider running the official linux SL client builds from www.secondlife.com, which will currently perform somewhat better than unofficial builds if compatible.
