random crashes EVERY session. Mostly during inventory download.. sometimes later.

removing cache files helps not..
got a goo session running as root..

Common to all crashes (signal 6, signal 11) is the following:

--
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::length_error'
what(): basic_string::_S_create
2007-11-09T14:11:44Z WARNING: signal_handlers: *** Caught signal 6
--
that " what(): basic_string::_S_create " seems to accompany every crash. for what the info' sworth.

any ideas, anyone?

edit
it happens on both the RC and Alpha clients, (both current and previous releases)

crash.crash.crash here

must have sent a dozen crash reports before finally giving up. absolutely no change to the client version or machine. working well before the restart, completely unusable after.

tx-Oh has submitted a ticket, one vote(from me) so far.

generated and sent crash reports (approx 10-11 pm pst 11/8/07) as i was searching for a common denominator(which looks to be the server code "upgrade";), whether anyone will read them remains to be seen.

it's ridiculous

even the one-time working "root' fix, seems to be a fluke..
i'm off to go playing world of warcraft.. maybe killing a few nasties in the dungeons will help purge my (biological) system of the dreaded linden lurgy...

i'm getting tired of having my online quality progressively downgraded by linden upgrades..

until later, maybe.

Seems to be a really serious problem. I am crashing in the same frequency, all 10 to 15 minutes. :-(

what i don't understand is that the mac client is reasonably stable. macs are built on a unix like core (the Mach kernel iirc) . someone at Linden Labs has unix programming chops, WHY is the Linux client (again, unix like core) such an hit or miss thing.

i guess market share rules and we should be happy that there is a linux client at all and just shut up and perpetually accept the crap end of the stick.

Crashes here as well:
Suse 10.2 x64 with x32 libs
Nvidia 7600GT with new nvidia drivers

Crashing started yesterday evening after the rolling restart. Before the rolling restart no problem and after the rolling restart every 5-10 minutes.

Regards,
Rebecca.

Simiilar configuration to Rebecca's -- OpenSuse 10.2 etc -- and similar experiences; since the restart I must have crashed more times in a day or so than I'd have expected to in fortnight.

I did submit a support ticket, complete with session logs, only to be told that they don't support Linux and that I should report the matter here, which doesn't really get anyone very far. The not particularly helpful reply also suggested, as a work-round, using a Windows emulator in the short term to see if that helped.

I'm not actually sure to what extent this is a Linux problem; several friends who run Windows have told me that they've been experiencing similar probles since the restart, too. I'm wondering if it's in part a geographical problem -- something to do with European servers. I'm a Brit and it's mostly my European friends who're having difficulties, too.

My knowledge of Linux is pretty limited -- as far as I'm concerned, in general my pc runs a zilliion times faster and more reliably with Linux than it ever did with Windows XP, and that's all I particularly want to know until I need to know more in order to do something specific -- but is it possible that the restart has introduced a general problem (or a problem on the European severs) to which the Linux client is more sensitive than is Windows?

Not just in Europe
11-10-2007 03:13
Oh no.. I wish it was only in Europe, but I'm in the USA, and I'm a crashing SL machine over here. I finally did reboot into Windoze, and I wasn't happy about it. I've been Linux only for well over 18 months.

I donno about you, but my emulator doesn't do the graphics that SL wants. BLAH!!

And fix the dang voice chat, while you're at it!! *grin*

Kudos here , kudos there, kudos kudos everywhere...

First succesful session over over 8 hrs (Run time: 26254.662 seconds) since LL reported resolved network issues and applied the regional restarts on friday.

Kudos where they are to be given. LL showed me this time it DOES know how to troubleshoot quickly for over 40K users online.

Also .. i had tremendous advantage in setting up my Preferences conform Lisbeth Cohen' point 5 in the note "Lisbeth 10 tips for a better sl performance".

5) Optimise your sl prefs
---------------------------
In sl, go to Edit menu -> Preferences. Change the following settings:

Network tab -> Maximum bandwidth 600
Disk Cache Size 500
Graphics tab -> Draw Distance 64
Graphics Detail -> Enable Bumpmapping and Shiny ON
Enable Ripple Water OFF
Avatar Rendering Normal
Lighting Detail Sun and moon only
Terrain Detail High
Object Mesh Detail drag slider to the right
Flexible Mesh Detail drag slider to the right
Tree Mesh Detail drag slider approx. 60% to the right
Avatar Mesh Detail to the right
Adv. Graphics -> Filtering: Anisotropic Filtering OFF
AGP Graphics Card: Enable AGP ON
Graphics Card Memory: Set to half the amount your graphics card have
Fog Distance Ratio: 4.0
Max. Particle Count: Set fairly low - somewhere between 0 and 100
Outfit Composite Limit: 5
Audio & Video -> Default Upload Bitrate: 64 kps

Why, thank you, WiLLuMPJuH, for the advice on optimising settings. There seem, of course, to be several schools of thought about what the best settings are, but I''ve adjusted my preferences according to see what difference these make. Difficult to tell immediately (other than some of the obvious visual differences), since it's hard to know what improvements and deteriorations are attributable to my settings and what are things for which I should thank or blame Linden Labs' servers.

Things certainly improved yesterday, at least for me, and then went rapidly downhill at about 1900 GMT, when I started crashing like a drunken stock car racer all of a sudden. I gave up after crashing for the fourth time in less than an hour, deciding to try again later in the evenin. ThisI did after reading your post. Things had certainly improved by then; my avi's movements seemed a lot more jerky after I'd applied your (Lisbeth's) settings but I'm not sure if that was because after applying them I went on to a party on a rather laggy sim.

It can't just have been my settings, though -- while I'm aware of the dangers of post hoc reasoning and drawing inferences from my own limited experience, it seems distinctly suspicious that performance should have deteriorated so spectacularly immediately after a restart; there's nothing I did that I can think of I did that would have caused all hell to break loose for me coincidentally with the restart (other than my avi wearing some rather hot new undies from Insolence, but I don't think so).

Where might I find Lisbeth's 9 other tips, I wonder?
