I'm so stoked there is a linux client for this game. I just wanted to say to the poeple at Linden that I would not have signed up for this game without the linux client and hopefully you have found it worth while to have created it. I will spread the word about the linux client.

I went premium cos of the linux client. I was basic, and never logging in cos I didn't care to boot windows just for a game. And then a friend linked me to the alpha linux client (even more alpha than it is now! there was no sound, couldn't copy/paste, had to hack in a patch just to be able to change clothes and have it draw right, etc). And even with all the problems, it looked pretty and let me play without booting windows, and I said 'alright, got to encourage this!' and went premium. And Linden Labs has yet to disappoint me, they're putting a lot of serious work into the linux client, and it's greatly appreciated!

need to upgrade?
10-15-2006 13:28
I installed version 1.12.2.9 a couple of weeks ago on Xandros Linux, it has worked fine, no problems.
But now when I try to log in to the program, I get a message saying that I must upgrade to a later version, but on the SecondLife website there is no newer version for Linux. So Linux users are stuck. Or is there a way around this? I was so happy that it worked so perfectly in Linux but now I just get the option to either "Download" or "Quit". Pressing either just closes the program. I noticed as well that the latest version for Windows and Mac is 1.12.2.9, so I definitely have the latest version, but in Linux it refuses to work now, saying that there is a later version, which does not actually appear to be the case. |

Actually I think I installed it on 5 October, but the file I downloaded is dated 16 Sep 2006. The file name is SecondLife_i686_1_12_1_9.tar.bz2, and when I run the program, in the bottom right hand corner, it gives the version number as "1.12.1 (9)". OK, I just noticed that the latest version is 1.12.2.9 whereas I have a much older version. Sorry, I will get the new version now. |

I am trying to figure out how to download SL on my version of xandros. Downloading should be easy. Try http://get.secondlife.com/ It should auto-detect your OS and offer you the matching archive file. If that shouldn't work as expected, choose the linux binary from http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php I am new to Linux, and I just cannot figure it out as it is so much different from Windows. if you can tell me how to get SL running on my PC, let me know. thank you For unpacking the package and for starting the application see: http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=165264#post1409154 (Sorry about the markup-garbage there, that's due to http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-156 To make it short: run tar -xjf SecondLife_*.tar.bz2 to unpack, cd into the new directory and run ./secondlife to launch the viewer) If you get errors on launching, check if you've got 3D acceleration working. |

Dont forget to install the 32bit compatibility stuff...
12-15-2008 10:18
Hi all,
Just a note for those that run 64bit versions of your favourite GNU/Linux distributions... I run 64bit xubuntu and had to install the 32bit compatibility packages for SL to run. I also disabled all sound related stuff in the viewer preferences to prevent crashes, and got the closed-source nvidia 3D drivers for my videocard to increase display performance. With all of that out of the way, the latest official 1.21.x Linden SL linux 'beta' viewer works well for me, and I imagine that 'unofficial ' viewers like the Cool Viewer will work even better. Kind regards, Fawn |
