I'm not able to view videos in SL, despite having installed GStreamer, along with all the plug ins I could find (I'm running openSuSE 10.2, and I'm downloading them using Yast).
However, noticed the following while the viewer was loading:
grab_gst_syms:81: Found DSO: libgstreamer-0.10.so.0 grab_gst_syms:41: Failed to grab symbol: gst_message_parse_buffering grab_gst_syms:42: Failed to grab symbol: gst_message_parse_info grab_gst_syms:94: Found DSO: libgstaudio-0.10.so.0 grab_gst_syms:108: Found DSO: libgstvideo-0.10.so.0 startup:193: GST init failed for unspecified reason.
So it seems GStreamer isn't loading at all. Can anyone interpret these messages for me? What do I need to do to get it working?

The failed to grab symbols thing seems to imply something is still missing... Maybe suse doesn't ship all gstreamer plugins (In debian there are three main packages: good, bad and ugly)...
Are you using a 64 bit version and a 32bit client perhaps? That used to give me a lot of trouble with gstreamer...

Your problem may just be the age of this release. OpenSuSE 10.2 is over a year old, an eternity in the Linux world. If at all possible upgrade to 11.1.

Spinach, you may be right. After Triss's post I had a check of what I'd installed. I can't install the ugly plug-in, since Yast tells me it can't find an installable provider of libsidplay.so.1() (64bit) for the ugly plugin. Does anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of the required module? Otherwise, I'll have to wait until I have time over Easter to install SuSE 11.1. Thanks for the help, both of you. It was really useful.
