HELP PLEASE! Ubuntu 8.04, Window Creation Error

Im trying to run SL using a nvidia 7600gtx in Ubuntu 8.04. The first time I tried, it ran perfectly (as far as i can tell), I increased the graphical settings in the application to almost highest (this same comp can run it at these settings on my XP partition), and applied them, and it ran just fine when restarted. Then suddenly, when I opened it again later (the 3rd time), I got the *Window Creation Error" and the app won't open. I'm pretty sure im using the latest nvidia driver in the Synaptic Package Manager (nvidia-glx-new). Other 3D apps run fine still (Google Earth, Warsow, Spring, all compiz features, etc.). I understand this has something to do with the configuration of the nvid driver, but i don't understand why it was working before, even after i adjusted the settings in app. I'm not familiar with configuring xorg (or anything with an X in front of it, for that matter), and I don't want to screw anything up, so I seek more seasoned advice than my limited debugging skillz.

ALSO, come to think of it...I tried running GTA: San Andreas in WINE, with similar results. It ran perfectly the first time (much to my surprise), and i increased all graphic settings to max (minus antialiasing which was unavailable), and it still ran perfectly. Then when I tried to open it today, nothing happens watsoever (it doesn't hang...just nothing happens).

I've seen the same error; at least one time I "corrected" things by re-installing the SL client.

You might check to see which nvidia driver you are using - I've seen systems 'reset' to different drivers. (Not sure how or why, but it seems to happen sometimes)

In my case, running a GeForce 7600GT - I'm running successfully with the default 'nv' driver.

Correction - something was wrong with my systems settings - I *was* running the nvidia driver.

You might post your xorg.conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) - it might help us see what's going on with your system.

Also, more specs on your system would be helpful.

I see stuff like this after an update that included an x.org, or kernel update. It's gotten to where I automatically run a reinstall of the nvidia driver when I see anything like that in the update list. Sometimes I don't catch a video system update from Novell, and sl breaks. Now, when sl won't run and I don't know why, I just run a reinstall of Nvidia drivers and it fixes it.

Have you tried the search function in the forum for that error message? I'm not saying that you haven't, but this error I think has come up before, and you might find an answer in an earlier thread about this...

What this basically means is that GLX is not available or that a 24bit depth was not available. As mentioned distro upgrades could do this and with the nvidia cards you really want the non free "nvidia" driver to get full 3d acceleration not the default xorg nv driver which is unaccelerated. Another issue is that the nvidia opengl library could have got squashed by an upgrade too.

A good test is to install the mesa-utils package (called that on ubuntu and debain anyway) and run the glxinfo program. This will print basic info (and possibly errors) if your system is not correctly setup.

So some basic checks, run the glxgears, check you are indeed on a 24bit color depth.
