Memory actually being used?

I know this has come up before, but I'm wondering if anyone's gotten any concrete information about it. I adjusted the settings.ini file to reflect my GPU memory (128), but Help > About SecondLife still shows 1 meg being used, and my performance so far suggests that that's all that's being used. When I go into prefs, I see all options grayed but 1 mb, but 128 is checked.

Is changing settings.ini actually doing anything useful beyond moving that little dot in the pref menu? Because if it is, and the client's actually got access to the full memory, then I need to do some serious tweaking before things work like they do under Windows, and I want to make sure I'm not wasting my efforts on that end.

Fedora Core 4, KDE, Kernel 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4, X.Org version: 6.8.2, NVidia 5200+ 128 mb, latest nvidia driver, AMD Athlon 64 2800+, 1 gig memory, 4 gig swap. I'm not running 64-bit FC

I don't think so. At least it's not the whole picture w.r.t. memory management. SL refuses to use more than 16mb of graphics memory now no matter what you do, so until that is fixed the game is going to look fuzzy. I assume it's at the top of the "to fix" pile, if it's not already fixed on the head. At the very least a commandline workaround would suffice for the time being.

Changing the setting to 256MB (I have a 256MB card) caused my client to keep some textures in memory longer, but by comparing the behaviour against the Windows client it is still way off the mark. So, you may get some marginally better retention this way but it will still be broken until the next update at least.
