Possible Bug: Skin/clothes corrupted, and then OK again

I had a temporary problem with the default avatar skin.

It gave me a brown male head, with a 3 day beard.

Once this appeared under SL Linux, it was evident in wine and the windows version. Possible Inventory corruption? After two days, the skin was OK again. In the meantime, I used a skin with no transparency. This was OK.

Last night I put on a bikini, and ended up with white sleeves on my forearms. I put on another bikini, and the sleeves were gone.

Earlier I put on my Bo Peep outfit, and a few others, and the lower half of my body went white and stayed that way. Changing skins and outfits made no difference. :(

Again, after a few hours (and several relogs), this was also OK. :p

One of my skins now has a permanently cerise torso and arms. I will keep trying it, to see if that has changed.

Could be the result of a dropped packet problem; I occasionally get a very shaky connection to SL from here in Europe, with loads of bad packets.

It could ALSO be fallout from the grid power failure... These phenomena are visible in Windows and Wine too, so not local to my cache.

I have this exact same problem, as have everyone else I know running SL on Linux.

This only seems to happen when editing my avatar's appearance. If I leave it alone, it doesn't happen.

The one fix I've found for this after trying just about everything and not getting any real response from support, is to fire up SL on my Windows partition and log in. Once in, I then edit my appearance. Saving should restore the correct color to your skin. You may need to do something like increase your height by 1 point just to be able to save, but this will fix the issue. You can then log back in under Linux and all will be well. Just remember that if you need to edit your appearance, you'll need to do so running windows instead of wine on Linux.

Sucks, doesn't it?

Thank you! :D

Now I can stop running around from one skin shop to the next, looking for "good linux compatible" skins & clothes :)

One good thing, though: now I DO have a better selection of skins!

Maybe I should change the word "possible" to "confirmed, in the thread title?

Well, it IS an alpha version.

But I cannot thank you enough for posting this solution! I would say this one belongs in the "tips" thread :D

I'm having this same issue. I don't have a windows PC at home, so I had to download SL onto my PC at work (which has windows on a partition), and reset the appearance. So, I guess I'm just not gonna change anything on my av until a new version fixes it. I think this problem shout get high priority.

Could be an alpha problem, but not the Linux Alpha Client :p

When I start SL Linux, and wine would probably say the same, I get told that the visual I have does not support alpha, since there are less than 8 bit allocated to alpha.

I tried "forcing" another visual in .Xresources, with a line "secondlife-bin*visual: 0x47", a visual (according to nvidia-settings) that DOES have 8 bit alpha, but aside from a few minutes at 100% cpu load, SL Linux would not load. :(

I would love to kinow how to get a visual activated that does allow 8 bit alpha; the default has 0 bit alpha :-( Anyone know how this works?

Thanks! Especially for the link :)

Suse being Suse, there is a special install page for us

Only one disadvantage: the nvidia module has to be re-generated if I get a new kernel, since the download is not under the managemant of Suse/yast. And not forgetting, X has to be shut down (init 3), and the nvidia module unloaded (rmmod nvidia) to install the upgrade.

I wil be trying out my "cerise" skin, and the others, to see if it fixes the problem, or just prevents the problem occurring.

I live in hope! :D

I get this problem with version 1.0.8178 of the Nvidia drivers. Except I haven't been able to get my face to look normal at all. I try to fake it by adjusting my hair to a color that's similar to my skin color. Not perfect, but better. Or wearing a costume that covers my face also hides it.

Does anyone know if this problem is visible to other players or just us?

Same here. I'm on the newest NVidia drivers, too. Same thing. The only way to fix it is to boot into the dreaded XP and change my appearance there.

Its visible to other players, too

I use non transparent skins; some of them work OK.

Otherwise, it's windows, re-adjust your appearance under windows. That seems to reset the skin again. :(

Well, I installed them; then along came the next kernel update from Suse, via Yast.

After that, the new drivers would no longer work or re-install, I couldn't remove them, and reinstalling the old drivers also bombed out.

So, a few brief hours later, I have a new linux install with the old drivers. :p

Since it didn't fix the skins and clothing problem, not such a great loss. Suse's comfortable install interface has its downside...

I took the opportunity to increase my swap to 2 GB from the default 1 GB. Luckily, my installation was very new - 2 weeks old; so nothing really got lost.
