I have the same problem here. I am running Ubuntu Breezy with a Radeon 9200 M9.

Any idea what the problem is?

custom avatar
02-02-2006 15:08
I had a custom avatar on when I first logged in via the linux client. I swapped it out and was able to see everything "normally" on my standard avatar...minus my eyes, ears and hair, which was a little disturbing.

I am able to see menus, and the map just fine with the 9000. However, no land or anything rezs. I can see ghostly pieces of other avatars, almost like they were covered in shadows. It's really strange looking. I'll try to get a screen shot of the welcome area later.

land etc loads?

Drake, are you saying that your avatar eventually loads, or do you mean that eventually the terrain and objects load?

Terrain and objects. I'm having problems with other avatars not loading.

Wish there was a command to force loading of an avatar.

This sounds like the "16 MB on Graphics card" problem. Nathan Stewart says how to set it in the settings.ini file. I have seen something similar on SL when 1.8.somthing had that bug, and I only got 16 MB of my graphic memory recognised.

If the new client logic says, texture cache is based on Graphic Card memory (16 MB if you don't fix the settings.ini file) and main memory (1 MB according to "Help, About Second Life", then you are out of texture cache as soon as you start SL

I have changed my graphics card memory in settings.ini so it is 32MB, but I still get these problems. I have also knocked all the graphics settings down to the minimum.

Only half of my avatar is there, and none of the world is displayed. As such, I am not sure if this is related to the memory problem.

Anyone have any more clues? Is this an acknowledged bug?

same here

I bumped my settings up to 128 and still have the same thing. I can see the top half of my avatar, no eyes, no ears, no hair. Occasionally I can see that thee are others around, but that's it.

Time for an upgrade to the latest and greatest CPU, card and as much RAM as I can cram into a machine I think.

:)

Subghoul - I don't think its a lack of hardware problem - my laptop is a very recent Vaio with a meaty ATI card and plenty of video memory and RAM.

I hear that the partial-avatar images are par for all clients.

:(

I hope this is not an ATI problem.

I have an Nvidia proprietary driver, NVidia FX 5200 128 MB and so far (knock on wood) no av problems.

I DID have skins go strange on me; the default skin gave me a dark suntanned 3d beard male face

I swapped to another skin, ran in windows on another computer, and then the problem vanished again. The original skin was good again.

I had similar problems with pants, that gave me white legs. Also vanished later.

Clearing cache did not help in both cases. It just went away... Bad Packet problem?
