Hello all,
I changed distributions last week from SUsE to Ubuntu 6.10. I had all the same and expected problems runing SL so I went back through this forum and found the posts that helped me get it running under SUsE. All was well except that when I got to the point where SL started and I seemed to be logged in and ready to go my system was frozen. Mouse wouldn't move the pointer and the keyboard was ignored. I had to power-cycle the system.
I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 on a Dell 8400 with a gig of RAM and an ATI 300X (X300?) graphics card with 128MB of video RAM.
I have two questions:
Is there an equivalent to Windows <ctrl>-<alt>-<del> in Ubuntu?
What might be causing this catastrophic failure?
Thank you all in advance, Saturnine
P.S. Remember, I'm a 4th grade teacher, not a systems administrator. Please frame you answers for the non-technical at heart.

There are some suggestions in the troubleshooting section of the README-linux.txt file. People here can probably help out if you need more details.

From: Saturnine Fei Great... where do I find that file? It's in the Second Life directory. If you extracted Second Life to ~/sl, then it's ~/sl/README-linux.txt

I've actually been having the same problem, and I followed that troubleshooting advice in the README file, and it didn't fix the problem. Any other suggestions?

I was freezing shortly after logging in with ubuntu 6.10 and an ati card. I ran second life from a shell with the export in this thread first: /263/84/151865/1.html and it works just fine for me now.

I had a pretty crappy explanation written here, but I deleted it because I made a stupid mistake in it Find your secondlife file that you click on to start second life. Open it in a text editor like gedit find the line which says something like #export ll_gl_blacklist=abcdefghijklmno remove the # in front of that line and delete everything after the = except the l save and run the file This is all I needed to do to stop mine from freezing.

I had the same problem running Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 9400 with an Intel 915GM graphics system. Mine now runs fine with export ll_gl_blacklist=j
